Philif Castell (Siierard), Baron Sherard Leitrim [I.], cousin and h. male,( c ) being s. and h. of the Rev. Philip Castell Sherard, 11. A., of Glatton, co. Huntingdon, Rector of Swinshead, in that county, by Sarah, da. of Montague James, of Hanover, in Jamaica, which Philip Inst Darned (who d. Nov. 1814 in his 47th year) was s. and h. of the Rev. Castell Sherard, M.A., Rector of Staiuby and Gunby, co. Lincoln (d. 1803, aged 70), who ( a ) Christopher Sherard, his elder br., 6. 19 June and bap. 9 July 1666, at Staple- ford, mat. at Oxford (Ex. Coll), 28 Nov. 1681, aged 15, and d, there, of a violent fever, 19 Feb. following, and was bur. 28 at Stapleford. He was " an accomplished gentleman." Fun. sermon by his tutor, Thomas Laxton, M.A, (li) " Tl le journals of the House of Lords state the dignity to have been that of viscount Stapleford and the date of the patent to have beeu 8 Nov. ; both statements prove, upon inspection of the enrolment, to be erroneous." [Courthopc.] ( c ) The right to the peerage has never beeu officially proved since 1859, but, tho' the heir male at that date was a very distant cousin to the then late Lord, his descent from the first Baron is certain, and his representation of him seems to be almost equally so. The proofs collected by James Pulman, Clarenceux, are among the private collections belonging to the College of Arms, but the pedigree has hitherto [1895] neither been placed on record there, nor proved before the House of Lords.
