(in the Liberal interest) for Okehampton. 1830-31, anil for Totnes, 1834-35 ; a Lord of the Treasury, 1835-39 ; Sec. to East India Board, 1839-41; Under Sec. for Home, June to Sep. 1S41 ; a Commr. in Lunacy, 1S45-52; Ch. ( a ) This John was bap. 2 July 1689, at St. Dunatans in the East, and bur. 28 Nov. 1757, at Stanton Harcourt. He was s. of Andrew Ilonnell, a merchant of London, who acquired in 1 689, the manor of Aswich, in Whaplode, co. Lincoln, which descended from him to the Dukes of Somerset. See " Coll. Top. et Gen.," vol. v, p. 341. (i>) His two elder brothers, Edward and Webb, both died young. (°) " A man of considerable acquirements and a generous aud frank patron of me" of science and letters; he was the author of a treatise on the relative elementary properties of the Ellipse and the Circle." [Ann. Reg. 1855.] ( a ) This was at a very critical period when, 1861-02, it was decided to strengthen our Naval defences. (°) He was the 5th Duke of Somerset who had enjoyed that honour. ( f ) He thus lent himself to the " modern-antique " spelling of the name of Ins family which (even allowing the alleged descent " a Sancto Mauro " to exist) had certainly ever since the 16th century, when first it became of any importance, been known as "Seymour."
