( b ) She, as Lady Seymour, was " the Queen of Beauty " at the celebrated tourna- ment at Eglinton Castle in 1839, beiiiK one of three sisters well-known for their beauty and accomplishments. Of them the Marquess of Dufferin (son of the eldest one) writes in his memoir of his mother, " The beauty of the sisters was of a different type, but they were all equally tall and stately. The Duchess of Somerset had large deep blue or violet eyes, black hair, black eyebrows and eyelashes, perfect features, and a complexion of lilies and roses — a kind of colouring seldom seen out of Ireland. Mrs. Norton [Caroline, wife of the Hon. Geo. C. Norton], on the contrary, was a brunette, with dark burning eyes like her grandfather's, a pure Greek profile, and a clear olive complexion . . . My mother [Baroness Dufferin and Claneboye], though her features were less regular than those of her sisters, was equally lovely and attractive." See also vol. iii, p. 190, note " c," sub " Dufferin," for some notice of these Ladies. ( c ) " Altho' a Liberal in politics, of recent years the Duke was not a warm admirer of Mr. Gladstone whom he styled " an enthusiastic politician trying to set every thing to rights," and "a very good Chancellor of the Exchequer, but a very bad Prime Minister." His Grace was " a man of excellent classical attainments and he was also a good mathematician." [Am. Reg. 1885.] ( d ) He (with the late Duke of Beaufort) was one of the beat amateur " whips " of his time, frequently driving "The Ago" to Oxford, &c. He was author of "The m Coaching Days," pub. iu the Badminton Series.
