In this case, the person commemorated is said to have been a John de Baliuhard, who, receiving in 1353 a grant of the lands of Carnegie took that name, by which for more than 500 years [! !] his descendants have been known, and many of them become famous. That last fact would, one would have thought, have been a reason for taking the title of Carnegie or Soutkesk, especially as we read in Burke's "Peerage" (1894) that "of the origin of the De Balinhards we have no record." 0>) This and the forfeited estates in Forfarshire were in 1764 purchased for /36.S70 by Sir James Carnegie, the 3d Bart.
