See also a somewhat wild conjecture, but one that occurs in a work of great erudition [Pike's "Constitutional History of the House of Lords]," that tho' " the reason for the application of the expression ' Baron ' to members of the families De Stafford and De Greystock has never yet been discovered, it is possible that the word may be only a part of the surname in each case, and may have no reference to the dignity of a Baron." In support of this remarkable theory the existence is quoted of one " Odardtis Baro," temp. King John ; of " Roger Baron," temp. Hen. Ill , and of " Robert Baron of Wilesthorpe, and another William Baron of the same place," temp. Ed. I., it being added that " there ia ample evidence that ' Baron ' was used merely as a cognomen without any reference to status or dignity." This kind of remark, however, might apparently be made as to the cognomina of " Earl " or " Duke." ( b ) See "Nicolas," pp. 761—809, for an able account of this letter. In There is proof in the rolls of Purl, of his sitting. See vol. i, p. 276, note " a," sub " Beauchamp," for a list of these Founders. {") In 1327 a fine was levied between Ralph de Stafford and Katharine his wife, Querents, and Humphry de Hastang, Deforciant, whereby the manors of Caleloud, Cornwall, and la Hide, co.
