N.B. — But this finding of the jury as to the date of Margr.ret's death, Hz,, 1 G Sept. (21 E. III.) 1347, is a manifest error (one not unlikely to have been made after the lapse of fifteen years), as is proved by the following abstract of an entry ou the Roll of Fines of 21 E. III. m. 8. :— ' Homaginm Margarete ux' Radi de Stafford, Blia et heres Margarete de Clare nap' ux'is Hugonis do Audeley, nop' Com'tis Gloucr' defuncti &c. dat' 10 December" (1347); Her father, Hughde Audley, died on 10 November preceding. That she survived her father is further confirmed by the following extract from the Oriyiualia lloll 21 E. III. rot. 24 (1347) :— " R' &c reddidit Rad'o de Stafford & Margarete ux' ejus, filie & h'edi Hugonis Daudele nup' Comitis Glou'cr' def & Margarete Cotisse Glou'cr' ux'is ip'ius Comitis, unius filiar' & h'edum Gilb'ti de Clare, quondam Comitis Glou'cr,' om'ia terras 4c. que fuerunt p'dci Hugonis & Margarete &c." (•) "Vir multum militaris " in 1336 [Chron. de Znnercrost, p. 2S8], while in 1372 " Homo quondam validus, fortis, audax, bellicosus, in armis streuuus ; senio cunfec- tus, longo squalore maceratUB." [R. Higden, Chron., MS. Laud, .129, f. 145], as quoted in " Boyle," where is a spirited engraving of him "from the Hastings Brass." (b) See p. 209, note "a." (°) Writs of that date were issued " Eufftmi de Stafford " and " liiro dc Stafford," and their names placed consecutively ; the first is probably this Hugh, aud the other, his cousin, Hichard Stafford, of Clifton Camville. It is possible that this writ waB directed to Hugh, not as the s. and h. ap. of an Earl, but as being himt'lf a Peer, as Lord Audley, tho' the designation (which, however, at that period was very anomalous) should, in that case, have correctly been "Hugoni de Stafford tie Judley.'
