He was b. 14 June 1771 in Edinburgh ; entered the army 1790, becoming finally, 1838, a General, and being Col. of the 46th foot in 1 S 13. He sue. his father as 5th Baronet [S.] 26 Feb. 1810 ; was M-P. (in the Whig interest) fur co. Edinburgh, 1833-34 ; and sue. to the peerage [S.] 20 March 1840 ;(») Keeper of the Great Seal [S.] 1840-41 and 1846-52; was er. 16 Aug. 1841 BARON OXENFOORD OF COUSLAND,( b ) co. Edinburgh [U.K.] with a spec. rem. of that dignity failing his issue male, to his br. North, in like maimer; K.T. 12 July 1847. He m. firstly, 23 June 1795 at Kenil- worth, co. Warwick, Harriet, 1st da. of the Rev. Robert Augustus Johnson', of Keiiilworth, by Anne Rebecca, sister of William (Craven), 6th Baron Craven of Hampsted Marshall. .She d. 16 Oct. 1823, and was bur. at Cranston, co. Midlothian. He m. secondly, 8 June 1825, at the house of her mother, Adamiua, 4th da. of Adam (Duncan), 1st Viscount Duncan op Camperdown, by Henrietta, da. of the Rt. Hon. Robert Dundas. He rf. s.p. 10 Jan. 1853 at Oxenfoord Castle, in his 82d year, ami was bar. at Cranston afsd. Will pr. March 1854. His widow d. at Oxenfoord Castle 1 Aug. 1857, aged 74, and was bur. at Cranston.
