Kerry, 7 and bitp. 23 March 173S/0 ; was Page to the Princess Caroline, aud afterwards (1745-48) to H.R.H. the Duke of Cumberland ; entered the 1st Foot Guards, 1756, becoming finally (1802) full General, and being Col. of the 70th Foot, 1783, and of the 44th Foot, 1814. He sue. to the peerage, 3 Feb. 1783 ; F.S.A., 14 April 17Sf>; Gov. of Londonderry, 1806. He m. 2 July 1774 (Lie. 27 June) at St. Anne's, Westm., Julia, widow of ( — ) Nevinson, of Newby, co. Westmorland, da. of John GaskaiiTH, (») In Nov. 1757, Mrs Delauey {Letters, iii, 468) writes of him as "pretty young man, lively and natural," and very pretty he certainly appears to be in his portrait "after Sir J. Reynolds," engraved in "Doyle," but on 9 Nov. 1775, H. Wnlpole [Journal] speaks of him as being [from gout] "an absolute cripple" tho' "eager to act a more ambitious part " being "as ambitious as if he had parts." ( b ) Of his two elder brothers (1) Thomas Howard, Lieut. Col. 1st Reg. of Font Guards, b. at Cork, 6 Jan. 1732/3, d. unm., being killed in an engagement at sea with a privateer, 1778 ; (2) William Wyndham Howard, b. at Drogheda, 9 April 1737, (i- young at Newbury, Berks, 7 Feb. 1739/40. (°) The wife of thia Philip Howard was Mary Jennings, through whom his des- cendants inherited a vast amount of property, known as " the Jennings estates."
