He m. 14 Aug. 1084, Catharine, 4th da. and coheir of Henry (Cavendish), 2d Dukf. of Newcastle, bv Frances, da. of the Hon. William Pierre- PONT. She, who was b. 14 Jan. 1065, <{. 20 April 1712 and was bur. at ltninham. (a) A charming picture, by Vandyke, of * Lady Tufton " [Qi/. this Lady], belonging to the Marquess of Lothian, was exhibited, ill 1894, at the Grafton Gallery. Until that decision, however, none of the Earls of Thanet appear to have ionic this title. Ha was one of the L.-Lieuts, who were dismissed by James II. See a list of them in vol. i, p. 28, note " a," sub " Abingdon." (°) Luttrell (" diary ) under 14 May 1092, writes : " Last night a rencounter in Lincoln's Inn Fields, betwixt the Earl of Clare and Thanet, who married the two daughters of the Duke of Newcastle ; the first was run thro* the hand, th' other thro' the arm ; the diflerence was about the late Duke's will."
