He, at first, joined with other Irish chiefs against the English, but. very shurtly afterwards, crossed over to England and resigned into the Kind's,; hands, in June 1543, his " Captainship, title, superiority tod country," covenanting " utterly to forsake anil refuse the name of O'lheene," i.e., that of " The O'llrim,' indicating the Chieftainship of the vast district, subject to that race. He accompanied his said uncle to England and was rr. 1 July 1543 (in the same patent as that in which the Earldom of Thoiuond had, as ahovistated, been conferred), BARON OE 1BRACKAN(<) [L] with the ordinary rem. to the heirs male of his body. On the death of his said uncle, 7 Nov. 1551, he ««<•. as /Curl of Thomond [1.] (for his life) according to the spec. rem. in the creation of that dignity, which he surrendered to lid. He m. firstly, Joan, only da. of Thomas (KlTZMAORICE), Ittth Baron of Kerry AND LtXNAW [I.], by (apparently) his first wife, Catharine, da. ami h. of Teige Mac-GarTHY-More. He m. secondly, Una, or Ownye, da. of Turlogh O'BiilEX, of Arragh, co Tipperary. He was living 30 Nov. 1582. (") Thomond, or Tuaidh-Muin (North Minister) was one of the three Principalities of Minister. See vol. iii, p. 82, note " b," sub " Desmond. ( b ) The head of the family was sometimes called "King" (but more usually Prince) of Thomond. They were descended from the celebrated Hrieu Buroihtne, principal King of Ireland, 1002—1004, thro' his grandson, Turlogh, also such King, who d 108(3.
