Sir William Rose Mansfield, G.C.B., I 1871 G.C.S.I., Lieut.-Gen. in H.M.'s army and Lieut. -Gen. Commanding H.M.'s forces in Ireland," was cr. 28 March 1871, HA HON SANDHUHST of Sandhurst, co. Berks. He was 5th of the six sons of John Manskikld, of Digswell House, Herts, by Mary Buchanan, da. of Gen. Samuel Smith, of Baltimore, in the United States, which John was s. of Sir James Mansfikld, L. Ch. Justice of the Common Pleas, 1804-14. He was b. 21 June 1819 at Huxley, co. Surrey ; ed. at Sandhurst College ;(") entered the 53d Foot in 1835; served in the Sutlej campaign 1845-40, acting as aide de-camp to the Com. ill chief at Sobraon ; was in Command of the 53d in the I'unjaub campaign 1848-49, and con- stantly employed on the Peshawur frontier 1851-52 ; was attached to the embassy at Constantinople as military adviser in 1855, proceeding thence to the Crimea ; Consul Gen. at Warsaw, 1350 ; Chief of the Staff in India during the whole of the Indian mntiDy 1857-59, serving at I.ucknow, and being wounded at Cawnpore ; made K.C.B. 1858 " in recognition of his valuable services in the East Indies, receiving the thanks of Pari, in 1859; Com. in chief of the Bombay armv 1860-65, and of the forces in India 1805-70.
