(of the half blood) and h. male, being 4th s.( b ) of Kenueth, 1st Lord Mackenzie of KinTail [S.], afsd., and the lid s. by his second wife, Isabel, da. of Sir Gilbert OuiLvv, of Powrie. He sue. to the peerage [S] under, it is presumed, the extended rem. of that dignity to heirs male whatsoever. ( c ) He was a somewhat zealous Presbyterian and a Covenanter, but joined the Royalist association at Cumbernauld in 1641, tho 1 in 1644-46 he opposed the troops of Montrose. Tn him, however, he subsequently submitted, swearing never to oppose the King, against whmii, he was, nevertheless, shortly afterwards again engaged, but to whose cause finally he again reverted. He was excommunicated by the Gen. Assembly in June 1C46. He subsequently made terms with the Committee of the Estates and did public penance at Edinburgh for his apostacy. He joined Charles II. in Holland, by whom he was made Sec. of State for Scotland. He HI. He was excepted from Cromwell's " Act of Grace "in 1654, and imprisoned till the Restoration. The Shrievalty of lioss was renewed to him and his eldest son. He m. Isabel, sister of George, 1st EaRL OF CnoMAiiTY [3.J, 3d da. of Sir John Mackenzie, 1st Bart. fS.]. of Tarbat, by Margaret, da. and coheir of Sir George Erskine, of Innerteill. He d. Dec. 1678. [S.], 1st s. and h., probably styled v.p, Loud Mackenzie till he sue. to the peerar/e [S ], as above, in Dee. 1678 ; P.O., 16S5, and K.T., being one of the eight original Knights on the revival of that Order, 29 May 1687. t d ) He followed James II. to France and theuce to Ireland, being at the siege of Derry and being cr. by that Monarch after his expulsion from the Throne, Marquess of Seaforth [S.] probably about 1690.f°) In 1690 he prepared to join the Jacobite forces in Scot- land at the head of his clan, but surrendered to Hugh Mackay,( f ) and was kept a prisoner till March 1696/7, when he retired to France. He m. Frances, 2d da. "f William (Hkhbert), 1st Marquess (titular Duke) of Fowis, by Elizabeth, da. of F.dward (Somerset), Marquess of Worcester, He d. iu Paris Jan. 1701. Will pr. 1708. (') He had two daughters, among whose descendants is the heir of line of these peerages, as also of the family of Mackenzie of Kintail.
