Charles Augustus (Ellis), Lord Howard de Walden- [1507], and Baron Seaford [1826], 1st s. and h. by first wife, b. 5 June 1799, and became dc jurc{' 1 ) Lord HOWARD i>e Walden on the death, 8 July 1S03, of his maternal great grandfather, the Earl of Bristol, above- named, to whieh Barony ids right was afterwards, iu Feb. 1807, confirmed by decision of the House of Lords. See "Howard de Walden" with which Barony the Barony of Seaford has since 1 July 1845 (when he sue. thereto) continued united. SEAFOKTH. Earldom [S] 1, Colin (Mackenzie), Lord Mackenzie ok Kintail I 1G23 rS-1 l Rt 8 - a »d h. of Kenneth, 1st Lord Mackenzie of Kintau [S.] (so cr. 19 Nov. 1609), by his first wife, Anne, da. of Uenrge Ross, of Balnagowan j sue. to the peerage [ S.J, March 1611, and was cr. 3 Dec. 1623, EARL OF SEA FORTH [S.], with rem. to his heirs male whatsoever. He built the stately mansion of Brahan Castle, co. Ross. He m. (a) His surname as on Garter's Roll (the one from which, excluding the surnames, the Roll for the House of Lords is made) is " Ogilvit-Orant," but it is not clear how soon after 1881 (see p. 95, note "b") this spelling (which differs from that of the two Baronies) was adopted. (»•) See p. 95, note " d." ( ,: ) His creation is thus commented on in the Greville Memoirs. " Everybody cries one against Charles Ellis's Peerage; he has no property and is of no family, and his son is already a Peer." His promotion was owing to Canning, who was » great friend of his cousin, George Ellis (il. 10 April 1815), who was a contributor (both) to the •' Holliad " and the " Anti-Jacobin " !
