Ditto of Earl of Mar [S.] to "John Francis Erskine of Mar. " 3. „ „ „ „ „ Viscount Kenmure [S.] to " John Gor- don, Esq., of Kenmure. " 4. „ „ „ „ „ Viscount Strathallan [S.] to "James Drummond, Esq. " 5. „ „ „ „ „ Lord Nairn [S.] to "William Nairne, Esq. " 6. 1826 May 26. „ „ Baron Duffus [S.] to "James Suther- land, Esq. " 7. „ „ „ „ „ Earl of Carnwath [S.] to " Major- Gen. Robert Alexander Dalzell. " To which may now be added 8. 1885 August 6. "An act for restitution of the ancient dignity and title of Earl of Mar " [S.] to John Francis Erskine Goodeve-Erskine. With the exception of the first one in this list, all these restorations were of peerages forfeited in connexion with the Risings of 171 5 and 1745. It should be observed that the restoration of 1742/3 applied only to the Duke of Buccleuch [S.] and the heirs male of his body, whereas all the other restorations are to the persons entitled to succeed the restored person in the specified dignities. This partial restoration, whereby the inferior dignities held by the attainted Duke of Monmouth were restored, excluding the Dukedom, is probably accounted for by the Earldom of Monmouth, cr. in 1689, being still in existence in the family of Mordaunt. Had it been extinct, no doubt the interest that prevailed for the restoration of the Earldom belonging to this cowardly and self-seeking traitor would have prevailed as to the restoration of his Dukedom, which, had it been restored, would now (19 10) rank as the 3rd English Dukedom. A some- what similar partial restoration of honours was that in 1858 of those of the Earl of Nithsdale [S.], attainted in 1715, whose attainder as far as concerned the Barony of Herries of Terregles [S.] was reversed, whereby the heir general became entitled to the Barony, whilst the Earldom, which was to heirs male, was still left under attainder. As to the 7 Peerages restored from 1685 to 1885 in the above table, those only are included which were so restored nominaHm, but many were restored indirectly, as The Earldom of Wemyss [S. 1633] and the Barony of Wemyss of Elcho [S. 1628] were so restored by an Act dated 26 May 1826 "to restore Francis, Baron Wemyss and others from the effects of the attainder of David Wemyss, commonly called Lord Elcho. " The Earldom of Airlie [S. 1639], the Barony of Ogilvy of Airlie [S. 1 491], and the Barony of Ogilvy of Alith and Lintrathen [S. 1639], were restored by an Act of like date " to restore David Ogilvy Esq., and
