mother was a woman of veracity; they both ate food. Behold, how we declare unto them the signs of God's unity; and then behold, how they turn aside from the truth[1]."

Having thus anathematized and disposed of the doctrine of the Trinity in Unity and its advocates, the Koran seems to feel its ground, and often discourses strikingly on the attributes. The following passages are worthy notice:—Chapter the 2d, entitled the Cow, "Omen of Mecca serve your Lord who hath created you, and those who have been before you: peradventure ye will fear him, who hath spread the earth as a bed for you, and the heavens as a covering, and hath caused water to descend from heaven and thereby produced fruits for your sustenance. To God belongeth the east and the west; therefore whithersoever ye turn yourselves to pray, there is the face of God, for God is omnipre-
