Part II
General Directions

1. These Directions may be cited as "The Traffic Signs General Directions 1975"

2. The Traffic Signs General Directions 1964[1] and the Traffic Signs General Directions 1966[2] are hereby revoked.

3.—(1) In these Directions the expressions "hours of darkness", "motorway", "primary route", "non-primary route", "stud" and "temporary statutory provision" have the same meanings as they have in the Traffic Signs Regulations 1975 (hereinafter in these Directions referred to as "the Regulations") and the expression principal road" has the meaning assigned to it by section 64B(8) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1967.

(2) Any reference in these Directions to any enactment shall be construed as a reference to that enactment as amended by any subsequent enactment,

(3) The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply for the interpretation of these Directions as it applies for the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.

4.—(1) Any reference in these Directions to a diagram by a number is a reference to the diagram of that number in any of the Schedules to the Regulations.

(2) Any reference in these Directions to any sign shown in a diagram being a diagram in any of the Schedules to the Regulations shall be construed as including a reference to any such sign varied in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations.

5. Signs shown in diagrams 502, 511,543 (except when used in connection with the execution of road works), 544 (when erected on or near a road on which a speed limit of 40 miles per hour or less on the driving of motor vehicles is in force), 548 to 551, 615 (except when used in connection with the execution of road works), 632, 734.7, 837.1 to 838.2 (when used on primary routes), and 1026 may be placed only at sites approved in writing by or on behalf of the Secretary of State, whenever the said signs so shown are to be placed for the first time at any given site on or near any road which is a motorway, a trunk road or a principal road; and the signs shown in diagrams 601.1,728.1 and 728.2 may be placed only at sites so approved as aforesaid whenever the signs shown in either of those diagrams are to be placed for the first time at any given site on or near any road whatsoever including such a road as aforesaid.

6.—(1) Except as provided by the next following sub-paragraph, signs shown in diagrams 606, 607, 609, 612 to 614, 616,617 to 622.2, 622.4 to 632, 636 to 640, 640.2 to 647, 650 to 656, 660 to 662, 712, 712.1, 719.2, 719.3, 729.1, 729.2, 760, 761, 801.3 to 801.5, 806 to 808.2, 810, 810.1, 812.1 to 812.3, 819 to 819.3, 1016.1 to 1021, 1025.1, 1025.3, 1028.1, 1032, 1033, 1036.1, 1036.2, 1037.1, 1043 to 1050, 5001 and 5003 may be placed on or near a road only to indicate the effect of an Act of Parliament, Order, Regulation, Bye-law or Notice which prohibits or restricts the use of the road by traffic.

(2) As exceptions to the provisions of the preceding sub-paragraph, the signs shown

(a) in diagram 606 when erected on the central island of a roundabout or when used in combination with a plate of the type shown in diagram 608,

(b) in diagram 609 when used in the said combination,
