That the Secretary of War be, and he is hereby, authorized to detail oi, oi oro in a. medical officer of the Army to investigate and report upon the re- Mexico, &c. ported existence and spread of cholera in Mexico and near the frontier of Texas, and should such epidemic invade the United States during the present year, it shall be the duty of said officer to give timely notice of the advance and spread of the disease, and to compile complete records of said epidemic, and to report the same through the President to Congress; and to defray the necessary expenses of this investigation, the sum of five thousand dollars is hereby appropriated, or so much thereof as may be required, to be expended under the direction of the Secretary of War.
