Forest Service . SALARIES AND GENERAL EXPENSES
General expenses . To enab le the Se cretary of Agricult ure to exp eriment an d to Experiments . Restricted to United make and continue investigations and report on forestry, national sta tes, fo rests, fores t fires, an d lumbering , but no pa rt of this appropriati on shall be used for any experiment or test made outside the juris- diction of the United States ; to advise the owners of woodlands as to the proper care of the same ; to investigate and test American timber and timber trees and their uses, and methods for the preserva- tive treatment of timber ; to seek, through investigations and the planting of native and foreign species, suitable trees for the tree- rro less regions ; to erect necessary buildings : Provided, That the cost of Cosvit o so f buildings . any building purchased, erected, or as improved, exclusive of the cost of constructing a water supply or sanitary system and of con- necting the same with any such building, and exclusive of the cost of any tower upon which a lookout house may be erected, shall not exceed $2,500 ; to pay all expenses necessary to protect, administer, Protection of na- and improve the natio nal forests, including tree planting in the tIonal forests . fo rest reserve s to preven t erosion, drift, surf ace wash, a nd soil was te Ante, p sr, and the formation of floods, and including the payment of rewards under regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture for information leading to the arrest and conviction for violation of the laws and regulations relating to fires in or near national forests, or for the unlawful taking of, or injury to, Government property ; to ascertain the natural condition s upon and utilize the national forests

transport and care for fish and game supplied to stock the national Careoffisha ndgame" forests or the waters therein ; to employ agents, clerks, assistants, and other labor required in practical forestry and in the adminis- tration of national forests in the city of Washington and elsewhere
to collate, digest, report, and illustrate the results of experiments and investigations made by the Forest Service ; to purchase neces- s ary su pplie s, app aratu s, office fixtures, law books, reference and Station supplies, etc . technical books and technical journals for officers of the Forest Service stationed outside of Washington, and for medical supplies and services and other assistance necessary for the immediate relief o f arti sans, labor ers, and o ther e mploy ees e ngaged in a ny haz ardou s work under the Forest Service ; to pay freight, express, telephone, and telegraph charges ; for electric light and power, fuel, gas, ice, and washing towels, and official traveling and other necessary expenses, including traveling expenses for legal and fiscal officers while performing Forest Service work ; and for rent outside of the Outside rent .
