CONTINGENT EXPENSES , DEPARTMENT OF LABOR For conti ngent and mi scellaneous e xpenses of the off ice s and bureaus of the department, for which appropriations for contingent and miscellaneous expenses are not specifically made, including the pur chase of statione ry, furniture, a nd repairs to th e same, carpets, matting, oilcloth, file cases, towels, ice, brooms, soap, sponges, laundry, street-car fares not exceeding $200 ; lighting and heating ; purchase, exchange, maintenance, and repair of motor cycles and motor trucks ; purchase, exchange, maintenance, and repair of a motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicle, to be used only for offi- cial purposes ; freight and express charges ; newspaper clippings not to exceed $1,800, postage to foreign countries, telegraph and tele- phone service, typewriters, adding machines, and other labor-saving devices ; purchase of law books, books of reference, newspapers, and periodicals, for which payment may be made in advance

Rent : For rent of buildings and parts of buildings in the District of Columbia for the use of the Department of Labor, $68,000 . Prin ting and bi nding : For printing and binding for the Depart- ment of Labor, including all its bureaus, offices, institutions, and ser vices located in Washington, Dist rict of Columbia , and elsewhere, $240,500, of which $500 shall be available at once . BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS Salaries : For the commissioner and other personal services in the District of Columbia, $272,980 .
