ments and good qualities are prominently and brilliantly set forth, but whose imperfections are not impartially portrayed. Alaman's Disert., Mexico, 1844, may be regarded as a complement to Prescott. Although he gives but a biographical outline of the career of Cortés as an individual, Alaman nevertheless displays great research on certain points upon which he throws much light. Armin, Alte Mex., Leipsic, 1865, supplies some additional information to that found in Prescott. This work is well written.
