Evening.
How beauteous and sereneIs summer's tranquil night,When Cynthia's silvery beamsSupply the earth with light.
When stars are gently gleamingWith radiance in the sky,And angels vigils keeping,Commissioned from on high.
Though the notes of birds are hushed,Yet fragrance fills the air,And the winds that softly blowNo signs of tempest bear.
When the hum of toil has ceasedThat wakes with early dawn,And saints to the spirit-landOn wings of love are borne.
While stillness reigns supreme,O'er mountain, sea, and earth,And Nature seems to worshipThe God who gave her birth.
Yes, beauteous is the sceneWhen night doth daylight close,And beneath the gilded skyAll's wrapped in sweet repose.
