- His death. "Port Jefferson, Long Island; April 10, 1903. Capt. John H. Kinner, fifty-seven years old, died last night from the effects of a self-inflicted wound. Capt. Kinner cut his throat on. March 16 while suffering from despondency. On the day that he committed the deed he received a letter from the owner of the yacht Montecito asking him to take command of the yacht for another season. He leaves a widow and two children."

- His death. "Veteran Yachtsman's Death Resulted From Self-Inflicted Wound. Captain John H. Kinner, aged 87, died last night from the effect of a self inflicted wound made nearly four weeks ago. Funeral services will be held at his late home on South street. Monday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, and the remains will be interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery. There will be a Masonic service at the grave, the deceased being a member of Suffolk Lodge No. 60. He was also a member of Port Jefferson Council, R. A. He leaves a widow and two children. Miss Laura and William H. Kinner. He was born in the village and had followed yachting for several years. He expected to have charge of the yacht Montecito this season, and received word from the owner to fit up the boat on the day he cut his throat."

- Suicide attempt. "John H. Kinner of the Yacht Monticeto Cut His Throat This Morning. An attempt at suicide was made this morning by Captain John H. Kinner, a well known yacht captain and a native of the village. He has been a sufferer from grippe for some time and was undoubtedly despondent because of lack of employment during the past winter and the uncertainty of securing a position. He has been in command of the yacht Monticeto for several summers, and it was presumed he would again have the berth this summer. Captain Kinner arose at 7 o'clock, and after kissing his wife went to the kitchen and drew a razor across his throat. The jugular vein was not severed, so the doctor gives a possible chance of recovery. He is conscious, but says he has no desire to live. Captain Kinner is 67 years of age, is a Mason and a member of the Royal Arcanum."
