Death of his sister. "Cornelia A. Patterson died on Sunday at her home, 1485 Jefferson avenue. She was the widow of Richard B. Patterson. The funeral will be held to-night at 8 o'clock."
His death. "On Monday, August 4, Matthew J. Betts, in the 66th year of his age. Relatives, friends and the members of Nassau Lodge, No. 29 I.O.O.F. are invited to attend the funeral services at his late residence, 106 North Oxford street, on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Internment at convenience of the family."
Death of his mother. "In Brooklyn, on Saturday, June 12, Mrs. Nancy Betts, widow of Matthew M. Betts, aged 66 years, 7 months and 10 days. Relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend her funeral, on Monday, from her late residence, 77 Carlton avenue."
Death of his father. "In the month of February last, the N.J. pilot boat 'Commerce' was lost on the coast, supposed to have foundered in a gale, having on board at the time four pilots, viz: McKnight Smith, Nelson Cole, M. M. Betts, and Thomas Scott, one apprentice, the son of McKnight Smith, and a crew of five hands."
Death of his father. "The pilot boat Commerce, with Messrs. Smith, Scott, Betts and Cole, pilots on board, has been absent from New York for twenty days, and it is feared is lost."
