Wesley Howard Sanford (1863-1938) was a river boat captain, most likely operating a barge or ferry between Manhattan, New York City and Jersey City, New Jersey. His death. "Funeral services were to be held this afternoon for Wesley Sanford, 13 Jefferson Street, who died Thursday morning at his home of complications after an illness of two weeks. Born in Kingston, New York, Mr. Sanford resided in Jersey City for the past 14 [sic] years. He was a retired river boat captain. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Greely and Mrs. Violet Blodgett; a son, George Sanford; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Pullis, of Catskills, New York; two brothers, Robert and Willard Sanford, and nine grandchildren."
Arrested for fraud. "Wesley Sanford, 58, a barge captain, of 391 Baldwin avenue, Jersey City, was arrested yesterday afternoon on a warrant issued by Judge Leo Sullivan, on a charge of false pretense on complaint of Alex Epispon, 26 Long street. Sanford gave Epispon $160 with which he was to purchase a horse wagon and harness, as they had decided to go into partnership in the peddling business, but the purchase failed to materialize, according to the complainant."
Suing Swift & Company for personal injury. "Wesley Sanford of Jersey City has brought a suit in the Circuit Court to recover $5,000 damages from Swift & Company, dealers in dressed beef. The damages are claimed for alleged injuries received by one of the defendant's trucks colliding with one Sanford was driving and throwing him violently to the pavement on June 21, 1904."
