Tale of Long Ago

Hakushū Kitahara

An old, old man to the mountain goes up;
An old, old woman to the river goes down.

In the mountain the firewood gathering;
By the river the waving to the floating peach.

Long, long ago is dear, so dear;
Always the blue skies, always the sunny birds.

The sleeping village is dear, so dear;
The evening glow and the sparrows in the grove.

An old, old man to the mountain goes up;
An old, old woman to the river goes down.
