@Prosfilaes: Thanks for bringing this up at WS:CV; let's see what we can discover about these translations. Unless I'm mistaken, any translations later than 1964 are pretty much guaranteed to be copyvio unless explicitly specified otherwise; others can be checked for renewals.


Many of these were published in One Hundred Frogs: From Renga to Haiku to English by Hiroaki Sato (Japan, 1983). There are two groups of translations in this work: those collected from previous publications, and those collected from personal acquaintances. Translations marked as "see note on Sato below" are of the latter sort. Sato notes that "most of it" was published in his article "Variations on a Theme of Basho" in Chanoyu Quarterly issue 19 (Japan, 1978).
