అ a, The first letter, of the Telugu Alphabet. Prefixed to nouns of Sanskrit derivation beginning with a consonant, it implies negation; thus శూరుడు śúruḍu, a brave man, అశూరుడు aśúruḍu, a coward.
అంకణము ankanamu, s. The space between two beams, or pillars.
అంకము aukamu, s. A mark or spot. 2. A numeral figure 3. The inside Of the thigh.
అంకమ్మ ankanima, అంకాళమ్మ ankalamma, The name of a village goddess.
అంకితము ankitamu, &c. adj. Marked ; numbered; paged. అంకితము చేయు ankitamucheyu, v. a. To dedicate a book.
అంకురము ankuramu, s. A germ, a sprout ; a bud-
అంకుశము ankusamu, s. An elephant hook ; the instrument by which the driver guides an elephant,
అంకె anke, s. A numeral figure, sign, or mark.
అంకెము ankemu, s. A stirrup 2. Half of a bullock load, or what is loaded on one side ofabullock.
అంకెవన్నె ankevanne, s. A stirrup.
అంగ anga, s. A long stride.
అంగణము anganamu, s. A court or yard. 2. The open square, forming the centre of native dwellings.
అంగదట్టము ans;adattainu, s. Drawers, trowsers, such as are worn by Mussulman women, or Hindoo dancing-girls.
అంగము angamu, s. The body. 2. A limb? or member of the body. 3. A part or branch.
అంగమొల angamola, adj. Naked.
అంగరకా angaraka, s. A short jacket, or vest ; such as is worn by Hindoos connected with Europeans.
అంగలాఱ్చు angalartsu, v.n. To grieve, to lament, to cry, to weep. అంగవస్త్రము angavastramu, s. A man's upper garment generally thrown over the shoulder, or respectfully tied round the waist.

అంగిలి angili, s. The uvula, అంగిటి ముల్లు angitimullu, s. A disease in the throat, generally peculiar to children.
అంగి, అంగీ angi, angi, s. A long gown; a robe generally worn by Mussulmans or Hindoos connected with Mohammedan Governments. అంగీ తొడుగుకొను angitodugukonu, v. a. To put on a robe. అంగివిడుచు angividutsu, v. a. To take off a robe.
అంగీకరించు angikarintsu, v. a. To consent, acquiesce, or accept a proposal. 2. To admit, 3. To approve.
అంగీకారము angikaramu, s. Consent, the acceptance of a proposal; admission, approval.
అంగీకృతము angikritamu, Adj. Accepted, admitted.
అంగు angu, adj. Agteeable; pleasant; handsome. This word is also used as a substantive, when it denotes beauty, agreeableness, &c.
అంగుళము angulamu, 8. A finger ; a toe. 2. The thumb or great toe. 3. An inch.
అంగుళి anguli, s. A finger or toe. 2. The thumb or great toe. అంగుళిత్రాణము angulitranamu, s. Apiece of leather or iron, often in the form of abroad ring, placed on the fingers of the right hand, to prevent their being cut by the bow-string, in discharging an arrow.

అంచనా antsana, 5. An estimate, a valuation, an appraisement. అంచనాచూచు, అంచనావేయు antsana-tsutsu, antsanaveyu, v.a. To form an estimate.
అంచనాదారుడు antsanadarudu, 5. A person who estimates the quantity of corn in a field, or salt in a heap, &c.
అంచు antsu, s. The ornamented border of a cloth. 2. The edge, end, or selvage. 3. The blade of a sword.
అంచె anche, s. A relay, or post; at different stages. అంజ andza, s. The food of a man. 2, The mark of a man's foot. 3. The measure of a foot.
అంజనము anjanamu, s. The smoke of a lamp made into paint used by women and children to blacken the eyes. 2 Conjuration, అంజనకాడు anjanakadu, a conjuror.
అంజలి anjali, s. The palms of the hands joined together in worship 2. The palms.
అంజాయించు andzayintsu, v. To delay to be in doubt ; to hesitate.
అంజిదోయాలు anjidoyalu, s. (used only in the plural.) A play with shells, peculiar to women and children.
అంటిచెట్టు antichettu, s. The plantain or banana tree.
అంటు antu, vl To touch, to handle. 2. To be joined, to come in contact with, to stick 3. To infect, to be contagious. 4. To be attacked by insects, 5. To anoint, అంటుజూడు antudzodu, s. Ear-rings that hang close to the ear, touching it అంటగట్టు aniagattn, v. a. To fasten or join together; to tighten.
అంటించు antintsu, v. caus. To cause to touch. 2. To join, to paste, to glue, 3. To sting. 4. To light or set on fire.
అంటు antu, s. Touching. 2. A graft. 3. Imaginary uncleanness, or legal impurity. అంటుబడు antubadu, To have the menses, or any other impurity. అంటువిడుచు, అంటువదులు antuvidutsu, antuVaduh?, To become free from the menses, or from any other impurity, such as that arising from the death of a relative, &c.
అండ anda, s. Proximity, vicinity, neighbourhood. 2. n. A buttress; a sloped wall built to support another.
అండము andamu s. An egg. 2. The testicle. అండవాయువు anuava'yuvu, The disease arising from the swelling of the testicle.
అండెము andemu, s. That part of a sack in which goods are put, when placed on a bullock. 2. Half a bullock load.
అంత anta, an indeclinable adjective and substantive pronoun. So, so many, such. thus. 2. That. అంతసేపు antasepu, So long. అంతమంది antamandi, so many persons. అంతమాత్రము antaini.tramu, such a quantity, so much. అంతమట్టుకు antamattuku, so far thus far, it is sometimes affixed to words, as దుడ్డంత duddanta, such as a copper piece i. e. the size or weight of a copper piece. అంతలో antalo, within that ; in the mean time. అంతకంటె antakante, Than that. అంతకుముందర antakumundara, Beiore that. అంతకంతకు antakantaku, By degrees. అంతగా antaga, Much ; frequently, vide. అంతా anta.
అంతట antata, The inflected ablative of అంత anta, afterwards ; in the mean time.
అంతము antamu, s. An end, consummation. 2. Death, destruction. 3. The waist, adj. Beautiful.
అంతరదామర antaradamara, s. A water plant, without any root in the ground, floating upon the surface of lakes &c.
అంతరము antaramu, s. The middle space ; interval. 2. Difference. 3. Bank. అంతరాంతరము antarantaramu, difference, or distinction of rank.
అంతరాళము antaralamu,s. The middle space ; interval.
అంతస్తు antastu, s. A story, or range i placed one above another; as the decks of a ship, the stories of a house.
అంతా anta, s. Sometimes written. అంత anta 5 The whole ; everything pro. Ali-adv. Completely, altogether, wholly, అంతవట్టు antavattu, In all parts. అంతటా antata, Every where. అంతే ante, That is all. అంతేనా antena", Is that all? అంతాఒకసారి anta oka sari, All at once.
అంతు antu, s. The whole> total, or aggregate, adj. Total.
అంత్యము antyamu, &c. adj. Final; ultimate; last, concluding.
అందనుక andanuka, ado. Till that time, as far as that place.
అందము andamu s. Beauty ; as రామునియందము ramuniyanclamu, beauty of Rama. adj. Beautiful ; as రామునిముఖమందము ramunimukhamandamu, llama's face is beautiful. అందగాడు andagadu, A handsome man.

అందాక anclaka, adv. Till that time, as far as that place.
అందియ andiya, s. A silver or gold ornament, worn by women round the ankle.

అంభారవము ambharavamu, s. The lowing of cow.
అంశ amsa, 5. A share, a part, a portion. 2. Good fortune or luck ; as ■sr»^ct6c'5 , '^^a vaniyamsa dO- ddadi, his good fortune is great.
అంశము amsamu, s. A share, a part, a portion.

అఖిలము akhilamu, acj;. All, whole, entire.
అగచాట్లు agatsatlu, s. This word is used only in the plural, and denotes. A very distressed and helpless state, or situation. 2. Ca- lamity ; adversity. అగచాట్లబడు a^atsatlabadu v. a. To suffer great distress ; to fall into adverse circumstances.
అగడు agadu, s. An accusation. అగడుపఱచు agaduparratsu, v. a. To prefer an accusation.
అగడ్త agadta, s. Aditch, or trench; a moat.
అగత్యము agalyamu, s» Necessity. అగత్యముగా agatyamuga, Necessarily, positively. మీరు అగత్యముగా రావలెను miru agatyamuga ravalenu, You must positively come.
అగపడు agapadu, v. n. To appear; to seem. 2. To be found, exss అగపఱుచు agaparrutsn, w. a. To point out, to shew.

అగిసెచెట్టు agisechettu, s. The lin plant. అగిసెనూనె agisenune, 5. Linseed-oil. అగిసెకూర agisekura The leaves of the Lin plant, which the Hindoos curry.
అగోచరము agocharamu, adj. Incomprehensible, imperceptible.
అగ్గపడు aggapadu, e>. n. To be seized, or taken.
అగ్గము aggamu, at/;. Possible. ఇది వానికి అగ్గము idi vaniki aggamu, lit. This is possible to him, he can do this.
అగ్గి aggi, 5. Fire. అగ్గిదగులు, అగ్గిదాకు aggidagulu, aggidaku, To be kindled by fire ; to be fatigued.
అగ్గువ agguva, adj. Cheap, of small value, easy to be had. వర్తకులు బియ్యము మిక్కిలి అగ్గువగా అమ్ముతారు vartakulu biyyamu mikkili agguvaga ammutaru? The merchants sell rice very cheap. అగ్గువగాతీయు agguvagatiyu, To buy at a cheap rate.

అచింత్యము achintyamu, adj. Beyond' inquiry ; incomprehensible, s. The number formed by a unit, followed by thirty one cyphers, or other figures.
అచేతనము achetanamu, adj. Inanimate, stupid, insensible.

అడవి adavi, 5. A forest ; a desert. అడవికంద adavikanda, s- An escu- lent wild root, అడవికోడి adavikodi, s. a jungle fowl. అడవిచెఱుకు adavi- cherruku, 5. Wild sugar cane.
అడావుడి adavudi, s. An alarm or disturbance.
అడిమె adime, s. bond man ; a slave ; slavery.
అడియాలము adiyalamu, s. A mark, a token by which any thing is known. 2. Any symbol used as a signature by those who cannot write their names.
అడిసాటా adisala, s. The obtaining goods from a tradesman in order to sell them. The business of a broker.
అడుకు aduku, v. a. To range-, to pile up.
అడుకులు adukulu, s. vide అటుకులు atukulu.
అడుగు adugu, s. A foot-step. 2. The mark or measure of a foot. 3. The foot or bottom of any thing. 4. A foot.
అడుచు adutsti, v. a. To beat ; to strike.
అడుసు adusu, s. Mire ; mud.
అడ్డ adda, s. A small measure, equal to two mamkas.
అడ్డంకి aldanki, s. Delay. 2. Hindrance ; prevention; obstacle. vide అడ్డము addamu.
అడ్డకట్ట addakatta, s. A dam, to shut up, or confine water.
అడ్డకమ్మి addakammi, s. The upper part of a door frame, carved in an elegant manner. అడ్డగించు addagintsu, v. a. To stop ; to hinder from progressive motion or action ; to prevent ; to arrest. 2 అడ్డనము aḍḍanamu, s. A shield; a buckler.
అడ్డపడు aḍḍapadu, v. n. To fall, to obstruct, to impede, to block up. 2. To interfere; to secure.
అడ్డబాస aḍḍabása, s. A nose ornament, or ring.
అడ్డి aḍḍi, s. Delay. 2. Opposition.
అడ్డిగలు aḍḍigalu, s. plu. A gold necklace.

అడ్డు aḍḍu, s. Any thing that affords concealment. 2. Any thing used to exclude cold of heat. 3. A cover.
అడ్డుగ aḍḍuga, s. Half a fanam, or a bout 8-pice.
అణకట్ట aṇakaṭṭa, s. An annicut or dam.
అణగారు aṇagáru, v. n. To be extinguished.
అణగు aṇagu, v. n. To be pressed down. 2. To be humbled, depressed, allayed, appeased.
అణగించు, అణచు aṇagintsu, aṇatsu, v. a. To press down. 2. To humble, subdue, reduce, allay, or appease.
అణకువ aṇakuva, s. Modesty. 2. Politeness civility. 3. Submission, humility.
అణా aṇà, s. An anna, the sixteenth part of a rupee.

అణువు aṇuvu, s. An atom; a particle so small that it cannot be divided; any thing extremely small.

అతిమధురము atimadhuramn, adj.Very delicious or delicate ; affording delight ; grateful to the sense or mind. s. Licorice.
అతిమాత్రము atimatramu, adj. Immoderate ; exceeding, excessive.
అతిరసము atirasamu, s. A sweet cake made from a mixture of rice- flour, sugar &c.
అతిరిక్తము atiriktamu, adj. Exceedding ; excessive. అతివాసము ativasamu, s. The fast observed on the day preceding the ceremony in which oblations are offered by the Hindoos to the manes of their ancestors.
అతివృష్టి ativrishti, s. Excess of rain.
అతిశయము atis'ayamu, adj. Excessive Wonderful ; marvellous, extraor- dinary. 2. Excellent. 3. Uncommon.
అతుకు atuku, v. n. To be joined, fastened, united, or soldered; to cling together, v. a. To join, fasten, unite, or solder together.
అతికించు atikintsu, v. a. Has the same meaning as అతుకు atuku, in its active sense.
అతుకు atuku, s. Junction. 2. A piece sewed upon a cloth, to cover a hole; a joint in a plank &c.
అతులము atulamu, adj. Unparallelled, unequalled.
అత్త atta, s. A mother-in-law 2. A maternal uncle's wife. 3. A paternal aunt. This last is termed properly మేనత్త, అత్తమామలు menatta, attamamalu, s. plu. The father and mother-in-law. 2. A maternal uncle and his wife.
అత్తరు attaru, s. Perfume, fragrance; essence, ottar of roses.
అత్తిమ్రాను attimranu, s. The glomerous fig tree.
అత్యంతము atyantamu, ad). Excessive, adv. Very, exceedingly.
అత్రి atri, s. Atri, one of the seven sages ; one of the principal stars in ursa major.
అదనము adanamu, adj. Much; great in quantity ; extra.
అదను adanu, s. An opportunity ; a critical point of time ; a junc- ture. అదనుకువచ్చినాడు adanukuvach chinadu, He came opportunely.
అదపు adapu, s. Pvespect ; politeness; awe. అదపులోనుంచు adapulo nuntsu, To keep in awe.
అదమాయించు adamayintsu, v. a. To frighten; to terrify.
అదరు adaru, v, n. To tremble; to shake; to palpitate; to start. అదరు adaru, s, Trembling; shaking. అదరుబెదరు adarubedaru, s Fear and trembling. అదరుగుండె adarugunde, s. A coward. 2. Habitual timidity; pusillanimity. అదరిపాటు adaripatu, s. A sudden twitch or start.
అదలించు, అదల్చు adalintsu, adaltsu, v. a. To menace threaten, or intimidate.
అదాటుగా adatuga, adv. By chance? by accident. 2. Suddenly. 3. Unexpectedly. అది adi, pro. She. 2- It. 3. That. This is the remote demonstrative pronoun of the third person singular, in the feminine and neuter genders.
అదిగో adigo, inter j. Look there ! Lo ! behold ! adv. yonder. This word is used when we direct the eye to an object in view.

అదృష్టము adrishtamu, s. Fortune; luck. 2. Fate. 3. Casual and unseen danger. దురదృష్టము duradrjshtamu, Bad luck. అదృష్టహీనము adrishtahinamu, adj. Unfortunate. అదృష్టమువచ్చు, అదృష్టముకలుగు adrishtamuvatstsu, adrishtamu kalue:u, To become fortunate. అదృష్టశాలి adrishtasali, A fortunate person.

అను anu, to say. This word is of very frequent occurrence in Telugu. When the speaker states what an-other has said, he does not, as in English, use the infinitive mood, but repeats the words of the original speaker, adding అని ani, thus he told me to write would, in Telugu, he rendered నన్నువ్రాయుమని చెప్పెను. nannuvrayumanicheppenu viz. నన్ను nannu, me వ్రాయుము rayumu, write thou అని ani, having said చెప్పెను cheppenu, he told, అని ani, is used, in the same manner, when we address, to a second person, orders to be delivered to a third ; as పంపించుమని చెప్పు pampintsumanicheppu, Tell to send. lit. send thou, having said, tell.

This is, in fact, a defective noun, as the derivation evinces: in the nominative case, here given, it signifies that time, and in general corresponds with the English adverb then, or if added to a relative participle, it represents our term when, not used interrogatively ; as అతడిచ్చినప్పుడు atadichchinappudn, When he gave. It admits of inflexion as అప్పటికార్యాలు appatikaryalu, The affairs of that time. అప్పటినుంచి appatinunchi, From that time, since then. అప్పటప్పటికి appatappatiki, Now and then, from time to time.

This verb governs the dative case; as ఈ అన్యాయార్జితమైన ద్రవ్యము వానికబ్బదు ianyayarjitamaina dravyamu vanikabbadu, This money, procured by unjust means, will not be enjoyed by him. ఈ యిల్లు వానికబ్బెను i ilia vanikabbena, This house became his property, or came into his possession.

అమానీ amani, s. This is a revenue term, used to denote the immediate management of any branch of revenue by the servants of Government, of the Zemindar, or of any other authority ; in contra-distinction to its being rented out. గుత్తదారులు పారిపోయినందున ఇప్పుడుతాలూకా అమానీఅయినది guttadarulu paripoyinanduna ippudu talukaamani ayinadi, As the renters have decamped, the district is now under amanee; immediate management.

అయి ai. The past verbal participai of అవు avu, To become. Lit. Having become. This word added to pronouns, and sometimes to other words, has the power of the emphatic letter "^ e, Thus, వాడై vadai, He himself. It sometimes corresponds with the English word like. మానైనిలిచెను manainilichenu, He stood like a piece of wood. It is also used in expressing such phrases as about to go, come, do <fcc. As వచ్చేవాడనైయుంటిని vachche vadanai untini, I was about to come.
అయితే aite, The conditional form of the verb అవు avu, To become, used as a conjunction to express condition, and corresponding with the English terms if, suppose it were so, but. When added to the past relative participle of any verb, ట్టు ttu, is inserted, and it then expresses the conditional form of the verb to which it is thus affixed. చేసినట్టయితే chesinattaite, If I, thou, he, sho, it, we you, or they do.

అయ్య ayya, s. Pure Telugu castes, especially the Komati, use this word to denote a father : as మాఅయ్యవచ్చినాడు maayyavachchinadu, My father came. But it is general- ly used, by all persons and castes, as a term of common respect, cor- responding to the English word Sir; ఏమయ్య emayya, what sir? అయ్యవారు ayyavarn, is a phrase used to denote a brahman, or a teacher who is always held in great respect. అయ్య ayya, is also, in courtesy, added to proper names. అయ్యగారు ayyagaru, A preceptor. 2. The planet Jupiter, the preceptor of the gods, and son of Angirsa.

అవయు avayu, v, n. To be broken into pieces ; to be destroyed. అవయించు avayintsu, *. a. To break to pieces, to destroy. వానికండ్లు అవసింది vanikandluavasindi, His eye sight is destroyed.
