Template:New Editor Checklist

From Wikisource

A checklist for proofreading pages on Wikisource:

Starting at the top of the page, check for any header text (e.g. the title of the book/chapter, author names, page numbers). If present, please move the header information from the Page Body text box to the Header text box. Formatting is facilitated by the Running Header template, which may look something like: {{rh||Chapter 4|Page 12}}.

Then going line by line, check that the text in the text field matches the text in the image of the page to be proofread (spelling errors unchanged).

For each line, please delete the hyphen (-) and/or paragraph break (¶) at the end of the line, unless:

The hyphen (-) isn't actually a hyphen. It could be an en-dash (–), em-dash (—) or longdash (———). Please do not delete these.
The hyphen (-) is actually a hyphen, but is part of a word which is typically hyphenated (e.g. mother-in-law). Leave the hyphen, but still remove the paragraph break (¶).
The end of the line is also the end of a paragraph. Then please do not delete the paragraph break (¶) at the end of the line of text.

For each paragraph, please ensure there is an empty line between the end of one paragraph and the start of the next, by introducing a paragraph break (¶) on a new line (by pressing enter). The new paragraph should also not be manually indented.

For each missing equation, image or table, please add either {{missing image}}, {{missing math formula}} or {{missing table}} in its place (do not upgrade the page status to proofread).

For each unnecessary space around grammatical elements, please delete it (for example: "apple pie ; banana bread" becomes "apple pie; banana bread").

Upon reaching the end of the page, if there are any further page numbers, printing marks or other footer text, please move these from the Page Body text box to the footer text box (except references). See the help page Help:Footnotes and endnotes for more on in-line references on Wikisource.

Finally, check the last character that remains in the Page Body.

If it is a hyphen, please leave it. However, if it is a hyphen in a typically hyphenated word, or any dash (–, —, or ———) appearing mid-sentence, please also add {{upe}}, the Unspaced Page End template, at the end of the same line (e.g. mother-in-{{upe}}).
If it is any character that also ends a paragraph, please add {{nop}}, the No Operation template, on a new line immediately after the paragraph ends.

Finally, if you run into any trouble, feel free to ask at Wikisource:Scriptorium/Help. Thanks for your contributions, and good luck!
