BALDWIN, James (1841–). An American author and compiler, born in Hamilton County, Ind. He was for a time superintendent of schools at Huntington, Ind.; in 1887–90 was connected with the educational department of Harper & Bros., New York, and from 1890 to 1893 was assistant editor of Harper’s Magazine. From 1893 to 1900 he was school-book editor for the American Book Company. His publications number Six Centuries of English Poetry (New York, 1892); The Famous Allegories (ib., 1893); Old Greek Stories (ib., 1895); The Horse Fair (ib., 1895); and Four Great Americans (Chicago, 1896).
