  • By the explosion of a task filled with carbolic acid in the wood-preserving factory of Messrs. Robbins & Co., south Brooklyn, last evening, Martin Voorhies and Michael Growere killed, and the building was destroyed. The total loss amounts to $16,000.
  • John Lindauer, charged with not having paid special tax as a lottery dealer, was held before Commissioner Shields in $500 yesterday to appear for examination.
  • Hon. Rufus F. Andrews was selected, as the Republican candidate for State Senator in the Seventh District, last evening.
  • At a mass meeting of the citizens of the Eighth Senatorial District at Terrace Garden, East Fifth-eighth-street, last evening, the nominations of Myer Stern, for Senator, and William H. McCarthy, for Assembly, were unanimously ratified.
  • Isaak Heck was found, yesterday afternoon, on the corner of Eighth-avenue and Twenty-ninth-street, suffering from the effects of poison which he had taken. He was removed to the West Station House by Officer ASTMAN, of the Twentieth Precinct, and thence sent to Bellevue Hospital.
  • Rosa Benter, of No. 170 Delancey-street, attempted to commit suicide last evening by taking Paris green. She was, however, promptly relieved of the poison that serious consequences are not apprehended. She was sent to Bellevue Hospital.
  • Volney Wright, recently arrested for having a large quantity of counterfeit tobacco stamps in his possession, was held yesterday to await the action of the Grand Jury of the United States Circuit Court.
  • The friends of Michael Norton the Tammany candidate for Senator from the Fifth District, held a mass meeting in Jackson square last evening to ratify his nomination. Among the speakers were Fernando Wood, Judge Cardozo, Algernon S. Sullivan, Colonel Crooke and others.
