Eno sagrado en uigo (13th century)
by Martín Codax, translated from Galician by Wikisource

This is a "cantiga d'amigo" (friend song) recorded in the Pergaminho Vindel (Vindel parchment) which was discovered in 1913 by the Madrid-based antiquarian bookseller and bibliophile Pedro Vindel. The full document, with transcriptions of the Galician text, was published by Vindel in Las siete canciones de amor, Madrid (1915).

Literal English Translation Original Galician Line

In the sacred place in Vigo
was dancing a beautiful figure.
I'm in love.

In Vigo, in the sacred place
was dancing a slender figure.
I'm in love.

A slender figure was dancing
that never held a lover.
I'm in love.

A beautiful figure was dancing
that never had a friend.
I'm in love.

That never had a friend
except in the sacred place in Vigo.
I'm in love.

That never had a lover
except in Vigo in the sacred place.
I'm in love.

Eno sagrado en uigo
baylaua corpo uelido.
Amor ei.

En uigo no sagrado
baylaua corpo delgado.
Amor ei.

Baylaua corpo delgado
que nunc ouuer amado.
Amor ei.

Bailaua corpo uelido
que nunc ouuer amigo.
Amor ei.

Que nunc ouuer amigo
ergas no sagrado en uigo.
Amor ei.

Que nunc ouuer amado
ergas en uigo no sagrado.
Amor ei.
