Translation:Mishnah/Seder Moed/Tractate Eruvin/Chapter 1/6

From Wikisource

Introduction

[edit]

This mishnah is going to discuss the physical dimensions necessary for a valid lechi. A lechi is a post (the composition of which is discussed later), which can be put on either side of an open alley in order to create an eruv.

Hebrew Text

[edit]
לחיין שאמרו,
גובהן עשרה טפחים ורחבן ועוביין כל שהוא.
רבי יוסי אומר, רחבן שלושה טפחים.

English Translation

The Lechis that were mentioned need to be ten tefachim high, and the thickness is irrelevant.
Rabbi Yose says that they must be three tefachim thick.

Explanation

[edit]

This mishnah presents a disagreement between Rabbi Yose and the rest of the rabbis. Although they all agree that a lehi must be 10 tefachim high, Rb. Yose feels that it also must be 3 amot thick, while the rest of the rabbis feel that the thickness is irrelevant.
