The Law of an Alley that is Open like a Centipede |
דין מבוי המפלש ועשוי כנדל |

Paragraph 1 - An alley that is open on both ends to the public domain or one side to the public domain and one side to the karmelit Rem"a: or both sides to the karmelit (Rivas"h chapter 405), needs a frame of an entrance on one side and a stake or beam on the other side. However, if one side is open to the public domain and the second is open to a yard that has no eruv, both sides just need a stake or beam. Rem"a: All of this assumes that the conditions of an alley listed above in chapter 363 paragraph 26 are fulfilled. However, if it is just a yard, it needs to be fixed like a yard is fixed on both sides. |
סעיף א - מבוי המפלש בשני ראשיו לרשות הרבים או צד אחד לרשות הרבים וצדו השני לכרמלית. הגה: או שני ראשיו פתוחין לכרמלית (ריב"ש סימן ת"ה), צריך צורת הפתח מכאן ולחי או קורה מכאן, אבל אם צדו אחד פתוח לרשות הרבים וצדו השני לחצר שאינה מערבת, אין צריך אלא לחי או קורה בשני ראשיו. הגה: וכל זה שיש לו תנאים המבארים לעיל סימן שס"ג סעיף כ"ו בדין מבוי, אבל אם אינו רק כחצר, צריך תקון חצר משני צדדיו. |

Paragraph 2 - The public domain itself can only be rendered permitted with gates that are locked at night. Some say that even if they are not locked, [it can be rendered permitted] if they are lockable. If the gates are sunk in dirt, one should dig them out and make the lockable. Once it has gates, the whole enclosed area is considered one yard and its entrances need not be fixed. |

Paragraph 3 - If an alley is bent in the shape of a dalet, it is treated like a bent alley open on both sides, and it needs the frame of an entrance at its bend. At each opening it needs a stake or beam. Alternatively, it can have the frame of an entrance at each opening and a stake or beam at the bend. If it is bent like a het, it needs the frame of an entrance at each of its bends and a stake or beam at each opening. |

Paragraph 4 - Alleys that are open to one another but none of them are bent towards the public domain, if the outermost alley is open to the public domain, the next alley's bend is considered open to the public domain. So, too, for the next alley and for all of them. |

Paragraph 5 - If an alley is shaped like a centipede, meaning that it is a big alley with many small alleys open to it, and the secondary alleys are open to the public domain, even if the small openings are not opposite each other, each one needs the frame of an entrance at its opening to the big alley. In the other side where it is open to the public domain, it needs a stake or a beam. If the big alley is open on both sides, one side needs the frame of an entrance and the other side needs a stake or beam. If it is open on one side, it needs a beam or stake at its opening. |
סעיף ה - מבוי העשוי כנדל, דהינו מבוי גדול שהרבה מבואות קטנים פתוחים לו וראשי השניים פתוחים לרשות הרבים, אפלו אין פתחי הקטנים מכאן ומכאן מכונים זה כנגד זה, עושה לכל אחד מבמקום פתיחתו למבוי גדול צורת פתח ובראשו השני הפתוח לרשות הרבים לחי או קורה ובמבוי הגדול, אם הוא מפלש, עושה צורת פתח מצד אחד ומצדו השני לחי או קורה, ואם הוא סתום עושה לחי או קורה בראשו. |
