That One Should Not Prepare On One Holiday for the Next |

Paragraph 1 - It is forbidden to bake or cook or slaughter on a holiday for the next day, even if it is Shabbat or a holiday, and even on the two days of Rosh Hashana. However, a woman can fill a pot with meat even if she only needs one piece. Rem"a: All the more so is it permissible to slaughter even though one only needs a kezayit (the Sma"k). Similarly, she may cook a lot of pots and eat a bit from each (Beit Yosef and Rabbeinu Yerucham and the responsa of the Rashb"a). This is all before eating, but she may not say after eating that she will eat a kezayit, because that is circumventing the law. However, if she sinned and cooked (or slaughtered), it is permitted to eat it. |
סעיף א - אסור לאפות או לבשל או לשחט ביום טוב לצרך מחר, אפלו הוא שבת או יום טוב ואפלו בשני ימים של ראש השנה. אבל ממלאה אשה קדרה בשר אף על פי שאינה צריכה אלא לחתיכה אחת. הגה: וכל שכן שיכול לשחט אף על פי שאינו צריך אלא לכזית (סמ"ק), וכן יכולה לבשל הרבה קדרות ולאכל מכל אחת מעט (בית יוסף ורבינו ירוחם ותשובת הרשב"א). ודוקא קדם אכילה, אבל אחר אכילה אינה יכולה לבשל ולומר אכל ממנו כזית, דהוי הערמה, מיהו אם עברה ובשלה (או שחטה) מתר לאכלו. |

Paragraph 2 - The baker can fill a barrel with water even though he only needs a handful. Rem"a: But he must put everything in the fire at once. It is forbidden for him to add [water] if the barrel is already near the fire, because it is unnecessary labor (the Magid chapter 1). |
סעיף ב - ממלא נחתום חבית של מים אף על פי שאינו צריך אלא לקיתון אחד. הגה: אבל צריך להשים הכל אצל האש בפעם אחת, אבל אסור להוסיף אם כבר החבית אצל האש, דטרחא שלא לצרך הוא (המגיד פרק א'). |
