One Should Not Cook for a Non-Jew on a Holiday |
שלא לבשל לצרך עכו"ם ביום טוב |

Paragraph 1 – We do not cook for non-Jews on a holiday. Therefore, it is forbidden to invite one over, lest one cook more for because of him. This rule is restricted to inviting him. Rem”a: to one's house, but it is permitted to send him food to his house in the hands of a non-Jew (Hagahot Maimoni chapter 1 in the name of the Or Zarua).' However, it is permitted to feed one's slave or servant or a messenger sent to him or a non-Jew who showed up without invitation, and we do not worry that he will cook more because of the non-Jew. Rem”a: And it is permitted to cook more in the same pot as he cooks for himself for the sake of his slave or servant (Mordechai) chapter 2 of Beitzah), but for other non-Jews, any way is forbidden (Orchot Hayim and Tosafot). If a Jew bakes in a non-Jew's oven and is obligated to give the non-Jew one loaf, he should not designate one of them for the non-Jew before baking, because then he is baking for the non-Jew. Rather, he should bake and afterwards give one (Kol Bo). |
סעיף א – אין מבשלים לצרך כותים ביום טוב, לפיכך אסור להזמינו שמא ירבה בשבילו. ודוקא להזמינו. הגה: לביתו, אבל לשלח לו לביתו על ידי כותי שרי (הגהות מימוני פרק א' בשם אור זרוע). אבל עבדו ושפחתו, וכן שליח שנשתלח לו, וכן כותי שבא מאליו, מתר להאכילו עמו ולא חישינן שמא ירבה בשבילו. הגה: ומתר להרבות בשביל עבדו ושפחתו באותה קדרה שמבשל בה לעצמו (מרדכי פרק ב' דביצה), אבל לשאר כותים בכל ענין אסור (ארחות חיים ותוספות). וישראל האופה בתנור של כותי וצריך לתת לו פת אחד, לא ייחד לכותי אחד קדם אפיה, דאז אופה של כותי, אלא יאפה סתם ויתן לו אחר כך אחד (כל בו). |

Paragraph 2 – If non-Jewish soldiers give flour to a Jew to bake them bread and they will not be mad if the Jew gives some of it to a baby, he is permitted to bake for them. |
סעיף ב – בני החיל של כותים שנתנו קמח שלהם לישראל לאפות להם פת, אם אינם מקפידים כשישראל נותן ממנו לתינוק, מתר לאפות להם. |

Paragraph 3 – It is forbidden cook or bake for dogs, but it is permitted to take their food and put it in front of them.
