That everybody is obligated to read the Megilah	שהכל חייבים בקריאת מגילה
689:1 1. All are obligated in reading [the megillah]: men, women, resident aliens, and freed slaves. We teach the children to read.	סעיף א הכל חייבים בקריאתה אנשים ונשים וגרים ועבדים משוחררים ומחנכים את הקטנים לקרותה:
689:2 Whether one reads or hears from someone who reads, the obligation is fulfilled, provided that it is heard from somebody who is obligated in reading it. Therefore, if the reader was a deaf-mute, or a minor, or mentally infirm, one who hears from them does not fulfill the obligation. And there are those who say that women do not fulfill the obligation for men. Rem"a: And there are some who say that if a woman reads for herself, she blesses "to hear the megillah," because she is not obligated in reading (Mordechai ch. 1 of Megillah).	סעיף ב אחד הקורא ואחד השומע מן הקורא יצא ידי חובתו והוא שישמע ממי שהוא חייב בקריאתה לפיכך אם היה הקורא חרש או קטן או שוטה השומע ממנו לא יצא וי"א שהנשים אינם מוציאות את האנשים: הגה וי"א אם האשה קוראה לעצמה מברכת לשמוע מגילה שאינה חייבת בקריאה [מרדכי פ"ק דמגילה]:
689:3 An androgynous person fulfills the obligation for others of their kind, and not for those not of their kind. A tumtum and someone who is half slave may not fulfill the obligation even for their own kind. Rem"a: There are some who say that they cannot even fulfill their own obligation and must hear from others (Beit Yosef).	סעיף ג אנדרוגינוס מוציא מינו ולא שאינו מינו טומטום ומי שחציו עבד אפילו מינו אינו מוציא: הגה י"א דאפי' את עצמו אינו מוציא וצריך לשמוע מאחרים (ב"י):
689:4 One who hears the megillah from someone from whom he has sworn not to accept benefit fullils the obligation].	סעיף ד השומע מגילה ממי שהוא מודר הנאה ממנו יצא:
689:5 In a place with no minyan, if one [person] knows it and the rest do not, one can fulfill [the obligation] for them all. If they all know how, everyone reads to themselves.	סעיף ה מקום שאין מנין אם אחד יודע והאחרים אינם יודעין אחד פוטר את כולם ואם כולם יודעים כל אחד קורא לעצמו:
689:6 It is a good tradition to bring male children and female children to hear the reading of the megillah.	סעיף ו מנהג טוב להביא קטנים וקטנות לשמוע מקרא מגילה:
