Spelling -- "donning" vs. "dawning"

[edit]

preface

[edit]

I apologize if this comment has been put in the wrong place, or if I have made some other mistake. ("See also" the "Explanation" below.)

background

[edit]

The verb "to don", (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/don#Verb) meaning "to put on (clothes)" is not used very often. I am a native speaker of English and, in my experience, the phrase "to put on" is usually used instead -- except for in a line from a song, which says "don we now our gay apparel". The verb "to don" is used so rarely, that I recommend to consider just using the multi-word verb "to put on" instead.

a mistake?

[edit]

At Arukh_ha-Shulchan/Orach_Chaim#Laws_upon_awaking_in_the_morning.2C_1-7 it says:

I think the word "dawning" there is a mistake and that the correct word [spelling] would be "donning". (The verb "to dawn" does exist, but it has a different meaning -- and it usually is not even transitive.)

Suggestion

[edit]

I recommend to change it, either to "Laws of putting on clothing and shoes", or else "Laws of donning clothing and shoes".

Explanation

[edit]

My reason for not just "being bold" and editing "now" (without discussing it first) is partly that, it is because I have less experience editing Wikisource than (say) Wikipedia. This is my first time, so I want to allow some time for advice or comments (or other replies), before I make a change. Also, there is a decision to be made about whether to use "donning" or "putting on".

Any advice or comments? --Mike Schwartz (talk) 22:00, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi

[edit]

Hi Mike. Thanks for your interest. It would be nice to have someone else on the project. There hasn't been enough people contributing yet to require group decisions. My choice is "Laws relating to clothing oneself", though if you wish to be more literal, you may use "Laws of putting on clothing and shoes". If you can improve the readability of this project, feel free to amend the text. Shemindex (talk) 17:00, 16 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I forgot about this (from about a year ago) and did not see your reply until now. I decided to change it to "Laws of putting on clothing and shoes." I also made some other small changes. --Mike Schwartz (talk) 01:02, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
