Translation talk:Romance of the Three Kingdoms/Chapter 3
In "page 2" the correct translation is an army of 200,000 not 20,000. Although this figure is probably exaggerated, we should translate this properly to reflect the content of the original text. —unsigned comment by 65.92.118.189 (talk) 07:39, 11 May 2008.
- Thanks for the feedback. I have corrected the page. For the non-Chinese speakers out there, this is a common mistake in translating Chinese to English. The problem stems from the fact that Chinese numbers have a unit for 10,000 (which English lacks). That means the number for 200,000 is literally "20 ten thousands" in Chinese. It is not uncommon for even experienced translators to mess up the conversion, especially when they are tired or pressed for time. This is the second time that such a conversion error has been caught and corrected (on both occassions, the error was found thanks to an anonymous contributor like you). -- A-cai 00:55, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Pg 25 - "Pulling on the silk reigns causes them to break, as the jade bridal whips back and forth; the flaming dragon flies down to the Ninth Heaven." - incorrect spelling of the word bridal (this usage connotes marriage, not riding tack) - you want "bridle", context suggests. - AK 2011
- You're absolutely correct. Thanks for catching that. I have fixed the error. -- A-cai (talk) 02:33, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
In "page 2" you translate that Dong Zhuo was "the marquis of Tai Village". The chinese text in front reads "Aoxing" (Ao2 is the legendary giant turtle); the chinese text in simplified characters given by Moss Roberts and the text in traditional characters given by "Sokamonline" do the same. Clicking on "Tai Village" of the translation sends one to the Wikipedia article "Wugong County" quoting the previous translation "Marquis of Tai Village" (!!) with the chinese 斄鄉侯. The first character reads "tai1" which is not the character 鳌 ao2 that appears on the text. I think therefore that the translation should be "Dong Zhuo, marquis (or lord) of Aoxing". 22 May 2012, 21:38 (Time of Paris, France)
