Categories on subpages

G'day, we generally avoid adding categories to subpages unless the category doesnt apply to the entire work. I mention this due to the subpages in Category:Kinetic gravity. We dont have a policy or guideline on the categorisation yet, so we are all still experimenting with what works. For your author of interest, feel free to create a redirect from Author:Richard C. Tolman to Author:Richard Chace Tolman.

Also, when we have more than one author, we tend to do something like ...

| override_author =[[Author:Person A]] and [[Author:PersonB]].

Historical Papers on Relativity to WikiSource namespace

Gday DH. I would like to propose that we move the page Historical Papers on Relativity to either WikiSource:Relativity or Portal:Relativity (former probably better, though latter may be preferred if doing interwiki), and we can possibly do a redirect for one to the other anyway.

1. We try to retain the main namespace for the works, not people's compilations/collections, and
2. The term historical papers seems a little redundant when much of WikiSource is historical works, and today's new research is tomorrow's history.

Generally we upload images to Commons

Gday DH. Generally we upload images/files/etc. to Commons, unless there is a reason not to do so, ie. someone looks to delete it. This has the advantage that they can be used across the whole of the wikis, not solely within ours. -- billinghurst (talk) 12:48, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Well, the images were created in 1897, so they are PD in the United states. However, the author (w:George Frederick Charles Searle) is from the UK and died in 1954, and in the United Kingdom his images are seemingly not in the public domain. But according to the Commons policy, the images have to be in the public domain in both countries - which is not fulfilled. So I uploaded them directly to Wikisource. History of Relativity: Langevin 1911

Hi D.H

I noticed your work in uploading material dealing with the history of relativity. The translation of the Dialog about Objections against the Theory of Relativity was uploaded by me.

I have a transcript that is suitable for the french wikisource: Paul Langevin's "L'evolution de l'espace et du temps". I have uploaded it to the following sandbox page: Langevin 1911.

You may be more experienced with peculiarities of the french wikisource, so maybe its more practical if you upload the Langevin article to the french wikisource.

I can read french well enough to transcribe the article, but translation is another matter. Also, I doubt translating the article is worthwile. I don't think it's an important article. The only reason the article is often quoted, I think, is because Langevin made the phenomenon of time dilation particularly vivid by describing how a spacetraveller can travel to the future. (Langevin didn't refer to twins, but other than that all the elements of the twin scenario are there.) With the source available in HTML coded form the section with the space traveller can be located by finding "voyageur" in the french text. --Cleonis | Talk 14:57, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Ok, here is the Wikisource-page of the author: fr:Paul Langevin. Do you want to upload it by yourself? Yes, it seems that Langevin's text attracts many people ;-). Now back to Wikisource: There are a lot of French pages on fr.wikisource with works and articles from authors, who died after 1938 and are only public domain in the US, not in the EU. See:

I am comparing the two transcripts. After some tedious cleanup I got the two files in a state where Winmerge can make an informative comparison. There are differences, so I want to check against the source which are errors on my part and which are the other transcriber's errors. Using the unified wikimedia account I created an account on fr.wikisource to upload Langevin 1911.
I do not expect that to use that account again; I will not watch that account on fr.wikisource.

I don't see the benefit in that as it is very specific and seems perfectly fine there. For our project space it has been about looking at works to do, how to format, getting and coordinating volunteers, having such discussions, ... As Template:New texts is monitored in IRC, and many users have it in their Watchlists, I was wondering whether you would consider adding the name of the text being added to the edit summary, rather than solely +1,-1. justification

The problem is certainly lessened by being full width, and it is not a long text, but I'm not the only one who finds justified text more difficult to read. This option is available to users as a preference, but not if we impose it. Anyway, that is my justification for removing it ... pun intended, apologies for that :P 13:18, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Gday D.H. I have seen that your recent uploads have been for images that Commons is able to host. I am thinking that it would probably be useful to add the template {{Do not move to Commons}} to such works. Wikisource, the free digital library is moving towards better implementation of book management, proofreading and uploading. All language communities are very important in Wikisource. Hi, I'm checking some of the work of a new and very enthusiastic validator and I've picked up a couple of formulae that might need adjusting, but I wanted to check with you on these as my theoretical physics is a long time ago. On this page you've got formulae 2 & 3 both with a power of ${\frac {3}{2}}$ in the denominator. Is this right? The printing looks to me like it should be a simple multiplier. Thanks for validating the article. Regarding your question, ${\tfrac {3}{2}}$ is indeed a power. Fortunately, Michelson's paper was also published in the "Philosophical Magazine" of April 1882, where the formulas have been printed more carefully. It's online at the Internet Archive, p. 239. Moving Your Files to Wikimedia Commons

Hello D.H/Archive 1!

First, thank you for your contributions to Wikisource. Any contributions are always very much appreciated. While searching around, I noticed that you have some files that you uploaded to Wikisource that would probably serve the community better if it was on Wikimedia Commons, a media file repository. You can view your files to see which ones I'm referring to. See the Image Guidelines for more information.

Why should you do this?

As an example, let's pretend you extracted a hard-to-find image from a book written in 1870. If you upload it to Wikisource, only Wikisource users can use it. What if a user from Japan is writing an article about a similar topic? If your file is on Wikisource, it's unlikely he'll find it, and if he's lucky enough to find it, he still won't be able to use it easily. However, if you uploaded it to Commons, it's much more likely he'll find it and be able to use it. (Files hosted on Commons are accessible from any sister project) The same goes for any PDF or DJVU files you upload as well.

Note: To "move" a page from Wikisource to Commons is simple, but somewhat confusing if you don't know how to. First, upload the file to Commons with the same file name as you did here. Add the same information, making sure you put in the correct license. I suggest adding the {{Wikisource image}} template to its Commons page. Then edit the file's page at Wikisource and add the template {{Now Commons}}. Soon an administrator will complete the "move" by deleting the Wikisource copy (as it's no longer needed). You don't need to change any tags on Wikisource as they'll automatically point to the new file. Awesome!
