- Thanks. I had a feeling if I just posted it, someone would come along to help with the finer points. This is a translation I did for the thesis I'm currently writing, so I thought I'd put it on Wikisource. One thing I was curious about is what to do with the original Spanish; I am tempted to do something like what I see at ROTK and pipe-link many of the words to their modern spellings at Wiktionary, since most of the spellings are either archaic or perhaps a result of the lack of printing standards (accent placement and things). For the Prospecto, I have set up transcription project on Spanish Wikisource: es:Índice:Aurora de Chile - Prospecto.djvu. Each of the three pages are separate Wikisource pages, into which you dump the text and format it as much as you wish. Once you have done that, the three pages are merged together by transclusion a single page in the main namespace; the Spanish Wikisource project has only recently adopted this new technology so you might run into teething problems.
The general idea is that if you set up the transcription projects on the appropriate language project, they will do the transcription for you, and when done : you can do the translation. To create the djvu file, I downloaded the PDF, removed the first page (on windows you can use PDFill), and then convert the PDF to DJVU using Any2DjVu - upload the djvu to Commons, and then create the Index/Índice page using the same filename (refer to the one I created as an example). - Sweet. Where pages end in a hyphen we undertake a level of preservation, and we utilise {{hyphenated word start|Begin|Beginning}} and {{hyphenated word end|ning|Beginning}} to maintain that niceness. Redirects of templates at {{hws}} and {{hwe}}. These are namespace tricks that will show up in Page: as per the work, and elsewhere as hws gives and hwe gives Beginning]. billinghurst (talk)

Presidential Calendars
[edit]I've upload a DJVU of the Nixons calendar for 1969 (combined all the PDFs). Here is the Index, it's 2018 pages. Is this more or less what you wanted (1 index for the whole year)? - Yes, that looks excellent. Since the original PDFs had a text layer, there should be some way to automatically seed all those pages with unformatted text, too. What I will say

In theory, I'd like to automate the process of creating index pages from the Commons metadata and adding documents to the progress table, but I'm not a programmer and development help is hard to come by. The button is really just a fancy link; it's not intelligent at all. In theory, again, we could watch for the page creations, since the file names (and hence page: names) are in a recognizable format, but someone would have to create that tool. The upload isn't close to being finished, but that's one of the reasons it's stalled right now, too. You might have noticed that the bot doesn't upload any multi-page documents. Once I get that capability, it'll start uploading a bunch of those, which is most of what is left (and mostly all textual!). Let me know if you know any Python. :-)

National Archives ExtravaSCANza
[edit]I was just in my archives, and I thought to thank you (belatedly) for the heads-up on the early January event. The timing wouldn't have been right then, but perhaps a future event, so definitely keep me posted—however that works... Also thought to mention (combing through the 'archives' of my brain, with the help of 'archived' emails)... back in April of 2009, NARA hooked me up with a scan of an instance of one of Mrs. Coates' poems (Under the Flag) which was entered into "Appendix Part (p. 587) of Volume 54 of the Congressional Record for March 2, 1917, under 'Extension of Remarks.'" Looking back at the email exchanges between two of the archivists (is that what you'd call them?), I am reminded of their senses of humor... Good people! [edit]Wikisource, the free digital library is moving towards better implementation of book management, proofreading and uploading. All language communities are very important in Wikisource. We would like to propose a Wikisource User Group, which would be a loose, volunteer organization to facilitate outreach and foster technical development, join if you feel like helping out. This would also give a better way to share and improve the tools used in the local Wikisources. You are invited to join the mailing list 'wikisource-l' (English), the IRC channel #wikisource, the facebook page or the Wikisource twitter. As a part of the Google Summer of Code 2013, there are four projects related to Wikisource. To get the best results out of these projects, we would like your comments about them. An Odd inquiry
[edit]I note that Wikimedia Commons has some art relating to 'historical BDSM art', Commons:Category:Historic BDSM art.
i) This got me thinking, at some point some of this type of art was almost certainly under Congressional investigation (the biopic of Bettie Page for example mentions some hearings.).
a) Which hearings are these likely to be}, b) Were the minutes preserved?
ii) The other question would be, in relation to some of the publications what the precise copyright situation would be, Some volumes claim "All Rights Reserved"(File:Cruel_Mrs._Tyrant's_Bondage_School_02.jpg for example) but its a 1962 work, which means a renewal would have been needed, Compendium (of US Copyright Practices) I, additionally seems to imply that some of this material (if it was regraded as obscene) might not have been granted copyright protection anyway. Perhaps you can look into this at some point and give a semi-definitive answer?
I appreciate that this is an unusal query (and may be out of your scope), but I've been told that all "legal" textual works (whatever the relevant Class) were open for consideration on for Wikisource, and early-BDSM fiction is not necessarily well represented in other archives, and it would be nice to have some basis for them being out of copyright in the US.
