Notice modeled after [4]

As Template:New texts is monitored in IRC, and many users have it in their Watchlists, I was wondering whether you would consider adding the name of the text being added to the edit summary, rather than solely +1,-1. Even if it is just have +Name of work, -1 that would be most helpful. Thanks. -- Cirt (talk) 04:27, 21 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yann, thank you for contributing this unusual version of a work of merit. But I feel I have to nominate it as a WS:COPYVIO because it seems to have been published at the Library of Congress under a Fair Use rationale, and because it duplicates a published, copyrighted, renewed 1951 work. Feel free to have your say at the WS:COPYVIO discussion, however. ResScholar (talk) 09:25, 22 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Photography: Theory and Practice and Canadian Wikilivres

[edit]
  1. As the French original version of Photography: Theory and Practice is believed to be legally copyrightable in the USA but PD in Canada, I am exporting many pages to Canadian Wikilivres. However, Wikilivres:Index:PhotographyTheoryAndPracticeOCRed.djvu is not working fully due to some missing templates, so I am postponing deleting pages here until everything is in better order at Canadian Wikilivres.
  2. Will Canadian Wikilivres become the website of Wikimedia Canada?
  3. Will Canadian Wikilivres be renamed anytime soon? I need the answer as its going to receive many files tagged commons:Not-PD-US-URAA, thus becoming the alternate website of Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons, will more likely require a fixed Chinese translation, but I cannot efficiently ask Chinese users if renaming is happening soon.

Who was Ben Junus?

[edit]

Hello—my turn to request your assistance, if you might be so kind as to spare the time?

Would you please give me your opinion on the possibility that the "Ben Junus" referred to here might in fact be Abu 'Ali' Isa ibn Zur'a/d:Q3147466? I freely admit I have followed such a long chain of (possible) connections to associate these two entries that I neither can entirely recall (nor entirely trust) this conclusion as valid. (Also, my grasp of French is appallingly poor, and I do not want to risk missing any subtleties on that page!)

Thank you, Viewer2 (talk) 23:29, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Viewer2: Well, searching for "Ben Junus 1008" only shows copies of this book. VIAF and ISNI don’t have anything relevant, so I don’t know where to look. Sorry… Yann (talk) 05:50, 7 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not linking to page namespace

[edit]

Gday Yann. Nice to see you back, and I hope that life has been treating you well. In this edit you linked the table of content pages through to specific Page: ns pages; it is not a current practice. If a link is desired (page ns to page ns), then we have {{DJVU page link}}, however, I don't bother. The thinking is that for a general user to end up in the Page: ns by following a link is not what they want, nor that we desire. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:52, 7 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Scans from Google Books

Moving Your Files to Wikimedia Commons

[edit]
Don't worry. He's watching your back. And yes, he's hosted on Commons.

Hello Yann!

First, thank you for your contributions to Wikisource. Any contributions are always very much appreciated. While searching around, I noticed that you have some files that you uploaded to Wikisource that would probably serve the community better if it was on Wikimedia Commons, a media file repository. You can view your files to see which ones I'm referring to. See the Image Guidelines for more information.

Why should you do this?

As an example, let's pretend you extracted a hard-to-find image from a book written in 1870. If you upload it to Wikisource, only Wikisource users can use it. What if a user from Japan is writing an article about a similar topic? If your file is on Wikisource, it's unlikely he'll find it, and if he's lucky enough to find it, he still won't be able to use it easily. However, if you uploaded it to Commons, it's much more likely he'll find it and be able to use it. (Files hosted on Commons are accessible from any sister project) The same goes for any PDF or DJVU files you upload as well.

Note: To "move" a page from Wikisource to Commons is simple, but somewhat confusing if you don't know how to. First, upload the file to Commons with the same file name as you did here. Add the same information, making sure you put in the correct license. I suggest adding the {{Wikisource image}} template to its Commons page. Then edit the file's page at Wikisource and add the template {{Now Commons}}. Soon an administrator will complete the "move" by deleting the Wikisource copy (as it's no longer needed). You don't need to change any tags on Wikisource as they'll automatically point to the new file. Awesome!

If you have any questions or concerns, don't be afraid to ask.

Automated import of openly licensed scholarly articles

[edit]

Hello Yann,

We are putting together a proposal about the automated import of openly licensed scholarly articles, and since you are an active Wikisourceror, we'd appreciate yourcomments on the Scriptorium. For convenience, I'm copying our proposal here:

The idea of systematically importing openly licensed scholarly articles into Wikisource has popped up from time to time. For instance, it formed the core of WikiProject Academic Papers and is mentioned in the Wikisource vision. However, the Wikiproject relied on human power, never reached its full potential, and eventually became inactive. The vision has yet to materialise.
We plan to bridge the gap through automation. We are a subset of WikiProject Open Access (user:Daniel Mietchen, user:Maximilanklein, user:MattSenate), and we have funding from the Open Society Foundations via Wikimedia Deutschland to demo suitable workflows at Wikimania (see project page).
Specifically, we plan to import Open Access journal articles into Wikisource when they are cited on Wikipedia. The import would be performed by a group of bots intended to make reference handling more interoperable across Wikimedia sites. Their main tasks are:
  • (on Wikipedia) signalling which references are openly licensed, and link them to the full text on Wikisource, the media on Commons and the metadata on Wikidata;
  • (on Commons) importing images and other media associated with the source article;
  • (on Wikisource) importing the full text of the source article and embedding the media in there;
  • (on Wikidata) handling the metadata associated with the source article, and signalling that the full text is on Wikisource and the media on Commons.
These Open Access imports on Wikisource will be linked to and from other Wikimedia sister sites. Our first priority though will be linking from English Wikipedia, focusing on the most cited Open Access papers, and the top-100 medical articles.
In order to move forward with this, we need
  • General community approval
  • Community feedback on workflows and scrutiny on our test imports in specific.
  • Bot permission. For more technical information read our bot spec on Github.

Maximilianklein (talk) 18:26, 20 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Maximilianklein: Thanks for notifying me. It is always nice to see Wikisource being the subject of attention. However I am a bit worried about the manpower to manage imported data. Ultimately, this will benefit Wikisource only if it increases globally its readership, and then the number of contributors. Regards, Yann (talk) 21:57, 20 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Scanning Books

[edit]

There are 2 very specific English works that I'd like to see high quality scans for on English Wikisource, assuming the copyright status checks out, and which I've not been able to find "freely" online yet.

  • The Chronological Table of the (Public) Statutes (of the United Kingdom.) ( Assuming the Copyright status is OK), We have an incomplete one from the 19th century, but it would be nice to have a more recent version dating from around 2012( which is I think when it moved online). I've not been able to find this work on online.
  • The Statutes of the Realm , which is a publication produced in the reign of George I, which re-printed most of the previous 300-400 years worth of English statute law. ( Google Books only has Volume 4 in unreadable quality.)

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:44, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

ShakespeareFan00: Do you know where we could find the book? How much it would cost? Regards, Yann (talk) 11:23, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
The first item varies , New editions in print are about 600-800 UKP on Ebay (probably more than could be justified.) ( Used copies of Older editions (up to 1992) can be highly variable ( anything from 100 to almost the same as new copies. And as I said I'm not sure what copyrights apply.
Statutes of the Realm, Given it's age I don't think is available outside established law Libraries, You might want to ask User:MartinPoulter if the Bodleian holds it. Getting this scanned would be more akin to WMF negotiating with the Bodleian as it would need some specialist equipment for conservation reasons.. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:49, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
ShakespeareFan00: OK, buying is not the solution here. Are there any library where they could be borrowed? WM France has a book scanner in Paris. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:22, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Books related to English law are probably not going to be in French libraries XD. The Bodleian Library in Oxford is as I said probably the best bet for the second. For the first a Law Library in England is most likely to have a copy (some places to try through GLAM might be the British Library in London, The LSE Library also in London and again the Bodleian in Oxford.) It might asking through Englosh Wikipedia's Resource Exchange. (assuming that either of them have the appropriate copyright status.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:07, 24 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

I would like to see scans of the pictorial works of Author:Arthur Claude Campbell. One of his books has recently been reprinted ([5]), the two Bengal works are also quite famous, and cited as reference in later works, but I could find no scan anywhere, although the 2003 reprint is available in the market and copies are available in various libraries. html code

[edit]

Hi mate. Hope all is well with you.

Just wanted to drop a note that we have been working through removing our use of html formatting, and instead focusing on the use of css coding through our Help:Templates#Formatting templates. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:47, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

And supplementary. We don't need to bury so much code into place with tables anymore. We can utilise css pages Index:The Path to the Stars, by K. E. Tsiolkovsky, English transl., AD0644808.pdf/styles.css to carry code, and we can do it by columns. Makes things so much neater and easier to proofread. If you need some pointers to how this can be done readily, please ping me. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:53, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Billinghurst: Yes, I do like to see some examples. I managed to do it with tables: Index:Ruppelt - The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects.djvu, Index:The Path to the Stars, by K. E. Tsiolkovsky, English transl., AD0644808.pdf. Yann (talk) 12:17, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I am no expert in CSS, though slowly get some understanding, so have my starter page at user:billinghurst/styles for index css. For ToC and data tables I can now basically just build straight tables with next to no internal formatting, and push it out; then css code. It isn't perfect as rotated labels are still problematic, though in the end WGAF about facsimile copies when we are reproducing author's work. — billinghurst sDrewth 21:31, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Just use The Writings of Henry David Thoreau/Civil Disobedience; with the title for the main work, followed by a slash, followed by the title of the essay. You should be able to move the existing copy to that location. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:00, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
OK, done. But since there are several editions of this collection, I also used the date. Yann (talk) 21:21, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Requested Texts (PD)

[edit]

These are working pages. The works should remain listed, and scans should be linked, so that people can go to the list and find newly PD works that have been requested and work on them. As works are finished, we celebrate that fact by repositioning them on the page, but don't remove them. --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:48, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@EncycloPetey: I already did, and continue to import requested files, but it is quite difficult to know what is needed if old requests are still there. Further, I don’t see the point of keeping them there once a request is fulfilled. When searching for a work, nobody will look at this page. Yann (talk) 19:28, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
If a scan link has been added, then that information lets people know the Index page exists. If it's been moved to a Validated section, then it's been validated. That's why they remain there: it provides information to people about what has been requested for the year and which ones have an Index, which do not, and which have been completed. If you aren't aware of why something has been done, the correct response is to ask, not to delete it. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:33, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
This doesn't answer to my remarks above… Yann (talk) 19:49, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
What do you consider to be "a request is fulfilled"? Loading a scan? Setting up an index page? Starting Transcription? Finishing first-pass proofreading? Validation? The request is for the work to exist on Wikisource, not simply a scan or index. You removed items where a scan was set up, but no proofreading had been done. You removed items where proofreading was started, but not complete. You removed items where first-pass proofreading was done, but validation was not. All of that is important to keep track of in fulfilling a request because the request is for a finished product where the work does not yet exist on Wikisource. I implied all of this before; does this longer explanation help? Further, keeping track of fulfilled requests tracks progress of requests. We move them to a separate Validated section precisely so people will know they've been completed. Removing them entirely from the page would leave people wondering whether the work that has entered PD that year has been transcribed, and then they have to go hunting for it. Having it listed on the page allows community members to know that those works were indeed completed. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:42, 3 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@EncycloPetey: Yes, I consider a request fulfilled when a scan is provided and an index provided. This is IMO supposed to help people who have difficulties importing scans. Yann (talk) 07:50, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's not why these pages were created nor how they work. They were created for Public Domain Day efforts. --EncycloPetey (talk) 14:59, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Special:LintErrors/missing-end-tag was tagging this as having unterminated P tags.

It would be appreciated if at some convenient date (and this isn't a high priority) you would consider some kind of repairs to these so as to support continuing efforts to reduce the 'noise' in such reporting. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:55, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wow, this is old! What should be done about them? Yann (talk) 11:33, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well, ideally the old messages should be re-examined to see if the <P> tags are actually needed. If not they can be removed, resolving the Linter concern trivally. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:36, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Nothing needs to be done about it. Lint errors are indicators only, there is nothing broken and never will be. The whole website is littered with these and browsers interpret them perfectly and have forever.
