Curly quotes

[edit]

I see that in On Liberty you have been replacing straight quotes/apostrophes with curly ones. Please do not do this, as it is against the Wikisource:Style guide. Thank you. BethNaught (talk) 13:39, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi BethNaught, I wasn't aware of the particular guideline. As soon I have the chance I would set back to straight any apostrophes I've changed, although in the original work are curly. On the other hand, I'm strongly against straight quotes because they make really hard to distinguish the start and the end of a quote. Note that in the original work they are curly and currently in On Liberty/Chapter 4 and On Liberty/Chapter 5 are curly. They were also curly in On Liberty/Chapter 2 and On Liberty/Chapter 3 before the 27th August, when I swapped the source to the transcription project. —Esponenziale (talk) 14:11, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Done: in On Liberty I've replaced with the straight variant all apostrophes and with the curly variant all quotes. —Esponenziale (talk) 21:22, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
The guidance is straight for all single and double quotes. Please don't use curly quotes, even though you have that preference. We are trying to keep to a singular style, and the use of quotations changed through the period since Gutenberg, and trying to flip flop through the history of quotation styles just leads to confusion and a mishmash. It is like with footnotes and endnotes, we have one style, and do not try to get weighed down in the style of a publisher, or a work. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:02, 13 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
The latest stable release of Microsoft Word still autocorrects to curly quotes and apostrophes: if an epochal change to the use of quotations has happened, it must have happened in the last 20 days. Anyway it seems to me that the rest of the community agrees about respecting the same style through the work and about advising for straight quotes, but it doesn't agree about imposing them everywhere (see Wikisource_talk:Style_guide#Curly/straight_quotes). –Esponenziale (talk) 07:29, 13 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
