Copyright statement has WMF contact statement
[edit]Hi James. Hope all is well with you.
At MediaWiki:Wikimedia-copyrightwarning the statement is cc-by-3.0 and I was going to update to say cc-by-4.0, however there is an html comment by PB that states that contact needs to be made with WMF General Counsel for the change. Can you confirm whether that is still the requirement? You might also consider whether there is a requirement to update the message more universally. Thanks, and please ping me when you reply. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:55, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Billinghurst: Thanks for the ping, that is in general the requirement yeah given that the Terms of Use talks about specific licenses being the expectation etc and there is both a strong preference for universality (to make it easier for people to understand cross wiki) and a strong desire to make sure we don't step on weird landmines since copyright conversations (and intermixing of differently copyrighted work) can have a lot of different components. Just to let you know that I saw this last Thursday when you pinged me with the link on IRC and have been talking with the lawyers about it since then. I hope to have a more complete answer tomorrow afternoon (Pacific) after chatting with them and will get back to you ASAP. Jalexander-WMF (talk) 05:53, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks JA. I know well that these things take consultation and that takes time, so would know that it wasn't being ignored, and sometimes conversations in backwaters create less waves. The statement will get updated at a point in time, whether it is due to this query, or another, <shrug> and the more important thing is that it is poked and prodded on occasions. Thanks for following up, and hope that all is well in WMF<SF<world>>>. — billinghurst sDrewth 07:14, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
