Smalldiv

[edit]

Please use the existing {{smaller block}} instead of creating a second template that serves the same function. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:24, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I'm not used to a very useful template on en.WP existing by another name on other WMF sites, and I didn't see a link at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q45130993, so I created it. I tidied up after your speedy deletion. Jonesey95 (talk) 21:34, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
The Wikisources have different needs and priorities. It seems that when Wikipedia created their template in 2018, they were unaware Wikisource had been using such a template for nearly a decade. The template is cross-linked to most other Wikisources. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:48, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
That makes sense. I am the one who created the smalldiv template on en.WP after looking around for an existing template to resolve Linter misnesting errors. I have proposed merging the two template pages in Wikidata, which will make it easier for editors to find a corresponding template as they travel among WMF sites. Jonesey95 (talk) 21:57, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
The potential problem with that is that Wikipedia editors will come here to "update" our copy based on changes made at Wikipedia, without considering the differing needs of Wikisource. This already happens with some regularity for other templates. --EncycloPetey (talk) 22:02, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
That is a problem at en.WP as well, although a lesser one, I'm sure. It shows up the most when people copy and paste wikitext from another WMF wiki and the parameters do not work as expected. Templates will always have forks and revision differences. I think there have been proposals over the years during those WMF "wish list" exercises for "universal templates", but I don't think any of them have ever gone anywhere. We can dream, can't we? Jonesey95 (talk) 22:13, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Also, I've had to revert one of your changes the involved Hebrew text, because it completely changed what was written. Please be careful that in fixing one error, you don't create further errors. --EncycloPetey (talk) 22:03, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for checking up on that edit. RTL text and I don't always get along, especially with GIGO like that. I have fixed the error while maintaining the appearance. Jonesey95 (talk) 22:13, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am done for now, having handled all of the fixable high-priority errors at Special:LintErrors/html5-misnesting. Jonesey95 (talk) 22:19, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. User:ShakespeareFan00 does a lot of Lint error cleanup here in our Mainspace, and would likely be a good contact if a future issue arises. --EncycloPetey (talk) 22:29, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Mid priority- Mis nesting/Stripped tags..

[edit]

Having cleaned out the high priority errors, Do you want to take on the 100 or so repairable misnests? (It's possible a little lower if you remove User/User talk or signature fixes which can be automated.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 02:19, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'll take a look. In some of them, it is not clear what markup was intended by the original editor, so I don't feel comfortable guessing. And as you know, RTL writing and I do not get along well. Jonesey95 (talk) 06:00, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Avoiding the RTL items is fair enough, I avoid them as well. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:59, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
All done! Jonesey95 (talk) 14:40, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Syntaxhighlight tag

[edit]

Did you mean

<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
...

</syntaxhighlight>

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Category:Pages_with_syntax_highlighting_errors ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:13, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I didn't know that |lang= was required. Learn something new every day. Thanks. Jonesey95 (talk) 00:44, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ongoing Delints...

[edit]

If you want to carry on delinting, the next logical category is unpaired tags, treating missing/stripped tags as paired categories. A possible focus would be unpaired FONT and TT tags ( To allow for a bot to convert them all to modern equivalents at a later date.. Generally 'cosmetic' formatting tags (B, I) are very lower priority and probably not worth dealing with right now, However things like DIV, UL,OL, TABLE etc are worth clearing as you have time :). I'm not sure how many of these remain in content namespace though, probably a very low number for proofread works as I can see. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:16, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'll wait until bots have had a chance to fix the easy ones, like missing /p end tags and missing tags in common signatures. Jonesey95 (talk) 00:47, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Misnest from text direction

[edit]

You've dealt with other pages with RTL text/Hebrew if I recall. Any words of wisdom for the italics issues on Translation:Shulchan Aruch/Orach Chaim/25 that are grabbed from the directional flip? Would putting those passages within {{hebrew}} templates be appropriate (one for the bolded section, one for the italics section), leaving the bold/italics outside the template work, or is there a more appropriate way? It's the last Misnested tag on an unprotected page. Zinnober9 (talk) 18:58, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

To say that I've dealt with such issues is quite generous. Basically, I screwed them up a bunch of times until I lucked into a pattern that appeared to work but that I did not understand. I usually stay away from RTL text. Jonesey95 (talk) 20:04, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, that's still more than I have done. I tried setting up the bold and italics first and then unceremoniously copying and plopping the RTL text inside, but that resulted in no net change, so I haven't lucked into a solution yet. Oh well, not a big deal. Thanks for the reply. Zinnober9 (talk) 20:54, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Nope, that one is lost on me. I tried a few different things. The formatting is inconsistent within the page, too, so I can't even tell what was intended. On en.WP, we never italicize Hebrew writing, so it would be an easier fix. I don't know the guidelines and consensus here. Jonesey95 (talk) 21:21, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Obslete tags..

[edit]

Any chance you could work your magic and clear the backlog of TT tags? Chipping away at Font tags myself.. :( Long process. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:50, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm going to pass. Too tedious. Are there any bots here? They could make short work of many of the remaining errors. Jonesey95 (talk) 23:41, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Stripped tags:

[edit]

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:LintErrors/stripped-tag

Any chance of working some magic on the remaining 20 or so ? ( The ones in ns104 Page: are known issues that don't need repairing right now.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 16:49, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

All done, I think. Some fun challenges. I had to import a template and module from en.WP to fix one of them. You can see the fun I had in my Contributions. Jonesey95 (talk) 22:00, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Great - Ignoring protected pages (and actual proofreading). There are some structural tags to close: I did some earlier, but reached the limits of my confidence on where to place the close tag.
- TABLE
P
OL
DIV

Some of these seem to be old (mis)formatted welcome messages that went un-noticed for years though :(. I've omitted the B and I , because you already considered those tedious to do :). ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 23:20, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

In terms of ns0 - https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Special:LintErrors/missing-end-tag&dir=prev&offset=1956473&exactmatch=1&tag=all&template=all&titlecategorysearch=&wpNamespaceRestrictions=0 (Mostly I and P) and in most instances finding a suitable scan is suggested instead of repairs.
The last push would be B I and other 'cosmetic' fixes in User and User talk space, but you considered those tedious earlier, and I reached the limits of my confidence in fixing them. Hmm...
@Jonesey95: - I did a few more I felt confident about implementing repairs for.. Mostly P and DIV remain (and one solitary OL) . No obligation but ever so slowly the delinting progresses. Any chance it will be cleared before December? (excepting protected Pages ans ns104):) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:54, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

SIC

[edit]

Thank you for updating how SIC works. I have tried Lord again but the floating text now shows [sic] 'Lord' and not [sic] 'Lord'. PeterR2 (talk) 02:22, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

The |title= parameter of {{tooltip}} can't have any styling in it. I don't think I can do anything about that. You'll need to use custom formatting to get the result you want. Jonesey95 (talk) 03:55, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
