SRF
[edit]Hi Red Rose,
I've looked at the two articles you've set up and made a start on the first. But the OCR button doesn't work at all on those files: I tried it on a couple of pages and the result was rubbish. (see p4)
The reason is almost certainly the resolution of the scan, which I'd guess at less than 100dpi whereas you need at least 300dpi (preferably more, say 500) to do OCR. So you have two options: either type it all in yourself, or get another scan done. Do you have access to the original document? If so, try and get someone to scan it at a higher resolution. Obviously the pdf will be a lot larger (at least 10MB). If you can get someone to convert it to djvu it'll be smaller, but don't worry too much. Wikisource has plenty big disks! When you've got it, click on the small pic on the index page and follow the link to Commons and then click on "Upload a new version of this file". The OCR button should then produce better results.
I've set up the first file at Self Realization Fellowhip Church Articles of Incorporation by changing the name on the index page to a link and then clicking on the red link and filling in the heading details. The "transclusion" is done by the <pages> command that I put on that page. But you'll see that after the first few sentences, which I typed, the rest is rubbish. You can get rid of the rubbish by deleting the text on p4.
Do come back to me if I can help more. Chris55 (talk) 17:49, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Chris - Thank you for your help! I did type in the WHOLE Articles of Incorporation and didn't use OCR - see it here - http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/SRF_Articles_of_Incorporation_1935 - (not sure there are two Articles of Incorp?) - I have already linked to this one on a couple of pages and it is working fine.
- The other article I did use OCR and proofread/corrected it all. How do I get this one to a place I can link to it on the pages?
- Sorry for my confusion but it is the first time I have done this. Thank you....Red Rose 13 (talk) 19:54, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I made a mistake in not checking for the existence of SRF Articles of Incorporation 1935, but of course there were no obvious links in either direction, and part of the logic of the proofreading extension is that there should be. ie. what you are supposed to do is to put the text on the pages rather than in the main article. These are then reproduced automatically on the main page (known as transclusion).
- If you're happy I'll start again and copy what you've done into the page space so that it follows the normal protocol. Ok? Since we're probably in different time zones I'd have to wait most of the day to get you confirmation, so I'll do it anyway. One of the benefits of wiki is that you can always "unwind" changes. Chris55 (talk) 07:36, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've now done the business for the incorporation documents, including the main signatures in the transcluded document. I've marked the original pages as "proofread" so you can now check them through and set them to "validated".
- I see that the situation with the court case is also in the main space as "Self Realization v. Ananda Church" - I've added a link from the index file. You could do the same process with that document as I've done with the incorporation document. However I notice that the Summary at the beginning is a copyright document, which is not allowed on Wikisource, so I have removed it. Chris55 (talk) 09:31, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- Good Morning Chris and thank you again for your much needed help! I understand now to bring an article into the index pages first and go through the process we just went through. I just validated the SRF Articles and what is the next step or is that it? I notice there is an unfinished colored bar on the main article.
- I didn't upload the Self v Ananda 2000 document - I just added the summary that was missing. I understand that you had to remove it. Is it possible to add words at the top, before the document begins, referring the reader to the original document to read the summary?
- This document needs to be proofread before I can validate it - US District Court Jury Verdict SRF v Ananda 2002 - http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:US_District_Court_Jury_Verdict_SRF_v_Ananda_2002.pdf/2 - would you be able to proofread that one? I uploaded this one and the Articles.I learn something every day in Wiki land! Red Rose 13 (talk) 14:38, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
Excerpts
[edit]Your recent upload to en.WS (should have been made at Commons not here btw) is un-hostable because it is only an excerpt of a larger published work - a work that is still under copyright to boot. We do not entertain "fair usage" here - either a work is complete as originally published and clearly in the public domain or it is not possible to be hosted here. Sorry. it will be deleted.
George I just spent an hour or so typing in all the words - how do I transfer this to Commons? Sigh....02:06, 1 September 2012 (UTC)I realize now that you need to delete it and I will add to commons. thanks youRed Rose 13 (talk) 02:58, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
