Welcome

[edit]

Hi, and welcome to Wikisource. I noticed you expressed interest in the The Popular Science Monthly Project. If you have any questions, I've done a lot of work on the first six volumes and compiled notes, sort of a guide for the perplexed, having paged through the volumes until the end. The proofreading guide here. — Ineuw (talk) 15:27, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

DjVu format over PDF

[edit]

Gday. I had wondered whether you had seen our page of information on .djvu files. When we have these files we are able directly import the text layer and have a visual check of the actual text for our proofreading system. An example is Page:The life of Matthew Flinders.djvu/384 If you are interested exploring more, then please get back to me. billinghurst sDrewth 03:07, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I has taken a look at those pages, but apparently Google Books' PDFs can't easily be converted to djvu. I am going to ask at Commons graphic lab to see if anyone can help with that. Nevermind asking. I am going to attempt to convert myself. Thanks, The New Mikemoral (talk) 04:21, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Just grab it from archive.org there looks to be a few choices, so you may wish to grab the best looking scan, as that generally indicates better OCR. billinghurst sDrewth 04:57, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmm... Now how did I forget to search archive.org? Thanks again, The New Mikemoral (talk) 04:58, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

The New Mikemoral, I uploaded this text for you using Mjbot. This is no longer necessary anymore since the software pulls in the text layer or does OCR on the document. However, I did the bot request anyways (Mjbot needed the excerise). If you have any questions or problems (or if you need more work done). Please let me know. --Mattwj2002 (talk) 12:55, 4 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi The New Mikemoral, I just wanted to welcome you to Popular Science Monthly Project! Thanks for joining. I am sure you'll see that it is a great group of text that is important to preserve. Once again welcome! --Mattwj2002 (talk) 11:41, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome! I will be back to working on Popular Science after I finish my work on The Red Rugs of Tarsus. I'm sure those sure some pages need proofreading and validation. --Mikemoral♪♫ 18:12, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Commons vs. Wikisource

[edit]

Thank you for bringing this up. I am confused over this. The French Revolution (Belloc 1911).djvu file is a book written by Hilaire Belloc, a UK author who died in 1953. My understanding of the Commons inclusion policy is that the file in question must be in the PD in the home country, and the UK is life + 70, so 1953 + 70, etc. That was my reasoning. Please correct me if I am wrong. I would rather upload to Commons anyway, I just didn't want the work deleted sometime in the future.Ingram (talk) 06:00, 9 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... PD laws get a bit confusing. I only saw the date and automatically thought of US law. I'm wonder if the rule of shorter term applies here, but IANACL. --Mikemoral♪♫ 01:44, 11 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
