over-"protected"

why is this page "locked"?

i could sort of understand "semi-protection", if we were getting a lot of vandalism here, but why are established users being prevented from editing it? that is not good wiki practice, nor is it supported by policy here or @ the wmf. Lx 121 (talk) 02:19, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

It's protected because it's on the featured text roster, and will be prominently featured on the front page, so vandalism is definitely anticipated. The guideline in question is WS:Featured texts. That being said, I agree that semi-protection would probably be preferable. Note, this is the first time that a collection of works by the same author is being featured, so there might be some hiccups like this along the way. @Lx 121: Protecting Featured text pages in the Main namespace is policy here, as Beleg Tâl has pointed out. It has been standard practice for a long time, and based on recent activity I've seen in the "New Texts" listings, such as ill-advised moves of works while listed on the Main Page, it is a good policy for Wikisource to continue to do so. --EncycloPetey (talk) 02:41, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

yeah, & this is part of why i left the project, & why i will not be returning. that is a dumb reason to lock out ESTABLISHED editors. the page is not "finished & perfect"; there is plenty of room for additions & improvements, & now only admins can make them. even if it is meant as a "temporary measure" while on the mainpage, it is excessive; & as a permanent rule for "featured" it is worse. ws/en is an admins-only "playground"; those not in the club need not apply. this is not how a WIKI-PROJECT is run, fare-thee-well. @Lx 121: I think you make an excellent point, and I think that if you approached this with the intent to improve the policy rather than condemn it, you would likely see some success.

@EncycloPetey: The protection policy for featured works is based on a combination of vandalism potential, and the fact that a featured text is complete and therefore further edits should not be necessary. I think that a lower bar is necessary for a featured author, since the page can in no sense be considered "fully proofread", and is far from being complete. At any time, another work by or about Potter could be added. I am lowering the protection to semi-protected for now, and we can crank it up in December. Of course, all of her hosted works are fully validated and will be fully protected. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 14:17, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
