8 John. Stephen Langton, who was consecrated by the Pope at Viterbo 17th June 1206[1], or according to others at Rome 17th June 1207; after a fruitless struggle with the Pope, the King was obliged to yield to the papal see[2], and acknowledge Stephen Langton as
archbishop[3] and receive him into his favour[4], and restore the temporalities to him[5]. He died 6th July[6] 1228[7] at Slindon in Sussex, and was buried in his
own cathedral[8].
- The custody of the archbishopric was granted 6th July to Bartholomeio de Crioil and Alan Poniant[9].
Walter de Eynesham[10] or Hempsham, a monk of Canterbury, was elected by the monks[11] but the election was set aside by the King and the Pope[12].

13 H.III. Richard Weathershed, surnamed Le Grand[13] chancellor of Lincoln, was nominated by the Pope[14], and the royal assent was given to the election 23d May
1229[15]; he was consecrated in August[16] following[17]
and he died 3rd Aug. 1231 at St. Gemma, on his way to England from Rome, where he had been to appeal
