Prom the first creation of the diocese of Rochester the bishop of the - - ems to have been appointed by and immediately dependent on the archbishop of Canterbury. In more than one instance however this peculiar authority \\a> disputed, and the monks of Rochest< r claimed and exercised the right of electing the bishop of the see. To put an end to these dis- putes for the future, king .John on 22nd Nov. 1214 granted and confirmed to Stephen, then archbishop of Canterbury, the patronage of the episcopal church of Rochester, with all its appurtenances, dignities,
