106 YORK. 1317 11 Edw.II. William de Melton, prebendary of Lincoln, canon of
York, and provost of Beverley , was chosen 21st Jan.
1315–16[1] obtained the royal assent to his elec- tion 5th Feb.[2]; and his Majesty on the 8th of the same month wrote to the court of Rome letters com- mendatory of the archbishop elect[3], and also issued letters of safe conduct for him to proceed at once to the Pope on the subject of his election[4]; notwith- standing which he was not able to obtain consecration till 25th Sept. 1317[5]. The King restored the tem- poralities to him 8th Oct. in the same year[6]. He died in April 1340[7], and was buried in York cathe- dral near the font. He successively held the office of chancellor of England and treasurer of the exchequer. On 13th April 1340 the King issued his license to the dean and chapter of York to elect an archbishop vice William de Melton deceased[8], and

William la Zouche, dean of Yorky was elected 2nd May 1340, but in consequence of the opposition of William do Killesby at the court of Rome, he could not procure consecration for upwards of two years ; the ceremony was at length performed at Avignon on Sunday 7th July 1342 by pope Clement VI[9] On 7th Sept. in that year the King issued his letters

II. p. 2. m. 5,) by which it appears that the temporalities of the archbishopric of York were in the King's hands from 6th Dec. 1315, the day on which William de Greenfeld died, until 8th Oct. 1317, when they were restored to William de Melton, then archbishop.
